Avatar Alumen was the Earth Avatar succeeding Avatar Indik and preceding Avatar Tokara. He was born in 2369 BG, his exact birthplace was unknown even to him. He founded Gaoling in 2300 BG at age 69, and crowned himself as the first ruler of the Beifong family. Alumen's descendants (the Beifong Family) still rule Gaoling to this day.
Alumen's era was a very unprecedentedly peaceful one, with no threats of conflict anywhere in the world.
At age 7, Alumen mastered earthbending. When the White Lotus told of his identity as the Avatar at age 16, he traveled to the Fire Nation to master firebending. His firebending master was the Fire Lord at the time, who was the great-grandson of Avatar Pozar (who unified the Fire Nation, and founded the Fire Sages, also ancient Fire Lords ruled for over a century, this continued until the death of the 10th Fire Lord). Later after mastering firebending, he traveled to the Water Tribe to master waterbending from an unnamed ancestor to Avatar Dakuwaq. After a year of learning waterbending, he mastered it, and then traveled to the Southern Air Temple to master airbending from the head monk at the time (who will be an ancestor to Avatar Rinpoche). Airbending was hardest for him, but he mastered it at age 20, also, the head monk's brother taught Alumen to master the Avatar State.
After becoming a fully realized Avatar at age 21, he lived in peace at his birthhome, until age 69 when he left to found the city of Gaoling, and crown himself as the first ruler of the Beifong dynasty; his line of descent still rules Gaoling to this day (as mentioned earlier). He then lived the rest of his life peacefully ruling the city of Gaoling as the first Beifong. He peacefully died in his sleep in 2206 BG and was reincarnated into Avatar Tokara of the Fire Nation, and his son, Xian Tong, succeeded him as the ruler of Gaoling.

Alumen appeared in The Legend of Korra only when korra saw visions of all the avatars just before aang restored her bending.
