Anataq was a Waterbending master, a member of the Southern Water Tribe and the older brother of Unnuk. During the Water Tribe Civil War, Anataq sided with chief Unalaq against the South.
History[]
Anataq was born into the Southern Water Tribe, a few years before his brother Unnuk. Growing up, the two brothers would help their parents every morning and night with their families small shipping business. Their parents believed the two were non-benders, as neither has shown any waterbending abilities, until one day, in a small outburst, Anataq almost capsized one of their families boats. Anataq was thrilled to have finally developed waterbending, only to quickly realise he would have to train and master the ability. Once he was old enough, he stopped training at the southern tribe and travelled to the Northern Tribe, believing he would be able to train much better until a northern master.
Civil War[]
By 171 AG, Anataq had completed his waterbending training and had become a master. He came into chief Unalaq's service and travelled with him and his children to the South, seemingly buying into Unalaq's subtle propaganda that the south had become unruly under Tonraq's leadership.
Once Anataq arrived, he sought out his brother, who himself had bought into the south's propaganda about the north. Anataq was quick to assert control on his family, telling them that what Unalaq said was law. Soon, following Avatar Korra's escape through the Northern blockade, Anataq was quick to make sure his family was safe, forcing them to stay inside their home during Unalaq's stay.
Harmonic Convergence[]
Weeks following Harmonic Convergence, Anataq was sent word by his mother that Unnuk had developed firebending abilities. He was surprised by this as countless people in the Earth Kingdom and the United Republic had developed only airbending abilities. Despite this, Anataq quickly put it out of his mind, as the two brothers had decided to disown one another following Unalaq's defeat. He spent the next several years in the Northern Tribe.
