40th Earth King Wang is the second Earth King, the ruler of the eastern Earth Kingdom, ruling from the capital city of Ba Sing Se during some of Avatar Anana's lifetime. He makes an appearance at least twice, and sometimes is mentioned by historian characters in Avatar: The Legacy of Rong Yan.

History[]

Early Life[]

Earth King Wang, was one of the youngest Earth Kings to rise to power in history during very troubled times within the Earth Kingdom. Wang was born to Earth King Yao and his unknown wife in 908 BG.

History's Youngest Earth King[]

The Da Xianzhang was created in 1081 BG, two years into Xi's reign which was a result of the previous ruler Regent Lord Baojun who ruled the Qiangda Kingdom with corrupt motives. He himself enforced and followed the rules set by the document he created and after he abdicated the throne to Regent Lord Qici who ruled until Xi's nephew Qiangda Avanindra became of age.

Earth King Yao raised taxes on all his nobles and made them pay a LOT of money. All this money he collected, so he could prepare an army to take over the Gangdise Shan mountain range and the Shang Qiao islands from the Air Nomads. Every time he lost a battle, he needed more money to buy equipment and men. All this money was a waste, as Yao didn't actually win any of the wars and lost most of his land to the Oma Kingdom. Every time he raised taxes, he would times the original amount by 4. For example, if it started at 28 silver pieces, it would then go up to about 110 silver pieces! If the nobles wouldn't pay up, Yao would have the Baojun Yan torture them until they gave everything they had.

Yao didn't like most of the clauses in the Da Xianzhang. These were some of the huge issues that were done by Lord Baojun and repeated by Yao. The document stated things like:

- Every citizen has a right to a free trial

- The king is not allowed to demand money from his nobility

- The temple had the final say on who should be appointed as their officials

- No widow will be forced to remarry

Even if they removed Yao, Shahuang was still the heir to the throne being Yao's firstborn. Rari and Anana interviewed several candidates even the governors of Bai Da and Chengdu who refused to take the throne. Governor Tangchi of Bai Da, suggested them to choose Yao's second-born Wang, who is the complete opposite of Shahuang.

Mercenaries were hired by Rari to kidnap Shahuang into forcing Yao to give up the throne in a ransom for Shahuang's life. In the end, the mercenaries failed but only succeeded in assassinating Shahuang and were killed by the Baojun Yan. Yao was distraught over the death of Shahuang, his son Wang communicated with Rari and Anana and felt no remorse for the death of his older brother. He knew while unfortunate it had to happen for him to take the throne, with the original Da Xianzhang in hand Wang, forced his father to abdicate the throne and unofficially crowning himself the new Earth King.

As a first act he dissolved the Baojun Yan, had his father arrested and imprisoned for breaking the treaties placed by the Xia and Shang kingdoms and for ignoring the Da Xianzhang that prevented an Earth King from being a tyrant. Wang sent word to the four air temples allowing Air Nomads to enter Qiangda Kingdom territory.

Rebuilding A Nation[]

When Wang was crowned the new Earth King, the boy had much to learn, his father's adviser was his teacher in the etiquette, and politics of being a great Earth King. Some of the changes that were made in the eastern Earth Kingdom were, the Air Nomads, were once again allowed to set foot on eastern Earth Kingdom soil. The taxes that were once high when Yao was in power had plummeted down to affordable prices.

The military were no longer in service 24/7, with no vacations, the use of the military were as followed: When the city is under attack, when there's a threat within the city that could be a danger to the Earth King, and/or when the declaration of war was planned.

Yao, had used his soldiers for many things, things that they were not obviously qualified to do, the men were able to see their families. Dead troops, were finally given a respected burial and were no longer cremated. Making the funeral prices affordable to the families of the deceased troops.

The taxes would no longer benefit the Earth King but now benefit, veteran soldiers, poor families, and the injured.

Tensions with the North[]

Chief Akitla's colonies have taken over the Bai Dai province and the capital Jun Lao. Governor Bei Sha, and her army were slaughtered by invading forces. These colonies were in northern Bai Da for over eight months. The city fell in a few days, lumber from the province was used for their settlements along with farms that grew to sustain themselves.

Wang ordered for a battalion of six hundred troops march to the city and liberate it, amongst the battalion were Senlin, Ku Tei and Laobing. While he carried out the orders, he also needed to bring back the Order of the Shadowed Hand. A group of legal assassins employed only by the Qiangda Kingdom.

Founded during the reign of Avanindra, he created written orders for these assassins to take out corrupt ministers or other politicians even leaders of other nations. The order went silent during the reign of Earth King Yao but returned soon after Wang was crowned the fortieth Earth King.

The order was sent to assassinate Chief Akitla, where Wang and their leader orchestrated the entire assassination plot. The order worked with the resistance and rid of all evidence that led to the resistance and the Qiangda Kingdom.

After the successful assassination, Wang worked with Akitla's successor, Bato who agreed to trade and gave reparations to Bai Da province over the damages they faced.

Involvement of the Avatar's life[]

Wang gifted Ku Tei with his animal guide Huyu, an armadillo lion that served as the Avatar's land transportation. He also organized Ku Tei's earthbending, and airbending masters. While also providing naval transportation to the Fire Nation, Jongmu Air Temple, and Southern Water Tribe.

Thirty Year War[]

The Thirty Year War began in 748 BG, under the reign of Wang, when two trade ships came to a standoff. The tensions that lasted nearly thirty years, were finally over after merchants from the North broke international law. They attacked Qiangdian merchants and sank their ship.

The North imposed new tariffs and quotas on Qiangdian imports, so the Kingdom retaliated with their own forms of trade protectionism. Wang wanted to protect his kingdom's domestic industry and create more jobs while the North attempted to reduce prices of all goods.

Wang sent Ku Tei to Omashu city in hopes he could convince Jiachu to unite the Kingdoms as one and decimate the Northern armies. But Jiachu refused to unify which left the Kingdom of Duryaja to fight their own war. The conquering of Beipan in Tuo led to the declaration of war with the Northern Water Tribe.

Later Life[]

Through this second marriage his second wife at the age of 45 in 826 BG, bore Wang's firstborn and only child Ta Po. His successor, Ta Po, also known as his son, had taken the throne after his father.

Wang abdicated the throne in 742 BG, and Ta Po rose to power. Wang spent the rest of his days as an ambassador for his son who ruled from the Badgermole Throne. He passed at the age of 166 in his sleep.

Abilities[]

Wang, was born a non-bender but he had other abilities or in this case skills. From the age of 16, Wang was learning the etiquette and politics of an Earth King. Studying the laws that an Earth King had to follow, the 37th Earth King had written that book, after it had once happened thousands of years. He did not want to make the same mistakes like his father, as Wang did have fair judgement.
