Warning! This page contains spoilers for Avatar: The Legacy of Rong Yan.

Ku is a minor character in the fanon Avatar: The Legacy of Rong Yan. Ku is the 36th Earth King of the Ba Sing Se Kingdom and the second king of the Tong Dynasty.

History[]

Ku was born to the 35th Earth King Zhuanxu of the Tong Dynasty and a noblewoman from House Xinao. A family who owned a brewery in five different provinces in the Tong Kingdom. The marriage was arranged for a very specific reason. Ku was born in 1235 BG, during which at the time his father Zhuanxu held control over the Si Wong state and forced the sandbenders to fight.

Ku was the firstborn and heir to the throne, he also had a brother and two sisters. Zhuanxu was too focused on the civil war to even bother to act like a father to his children. As such, Ku learned to be like his father and grew up having a similar personality as his male role model.

At the age of 19, Ku's younger brother tried to poison his older brother for the throne. After Duye, learned of the significance of the inheritance to the throne and when he found out his purpose in life will not be as great as his older brother he was jealous.

He attempted to poison Ku's food but he failed when he gave a smaller dosage of the poison, a plant that grew in the Si Wong territory of Gaxun, which at the time was the southern Tong Kingdom. The black shade plant was grown by the criminal underground of Tien Shan the capital of the Gaxun tribe.

The small and incorrect dosage given to Ku caused him to become ill, while Zhuanxu didn't know the relationship between both of his sons. His daughters knew Duye was jealous of Ku, the youngest daughter Haizi eavesdropped on Duye talking to himself one night and found out he poisoned his brother.

She reported it to her father that Duye poisoned Ku, an alchemist was brought forth to cure Prince Ku, it was revealed that the black shade plant was the culprit. Ku was lucky because Duye gave him the incorrect dosage which only made him ill. Zhuanxu punished his younger son and stripped him of his title and imprisoned him in the palace dungeons for life.

Ku recovered months later, and his vision wasn't good after this sometimes he required lenses to read scrolls. This wasn't one of the few side effects he received after being poisoned with black shade. His father died at the age of 122 in 1143 BG, Ku was crowned the Earth King at the age of 92. Ku himself was a very old king he knew soon he'd pass and four years later he was given a son by a young concubine.

Xi's Future[]

His son Xi was born in 1139 BG, news had gotten out to the world leaders that Avatar Arrluk had passed away. The search for the Avatar begun for two years the identity of the Earth Kingdom Avatar was unknown. It happened to turn out the Avatar lived in the royal palace of Ba Sing Se.

By tradition, the Avatar is supposed to be allowed to have a childhood as the stresses of being an Avatar could bring great harm to a child. Except Ku never told his son Xi about his Avatar status. He knew the complications of Xi's future as both the Avatar and the Earth Prince.

He fought with the earth sages and even threatened to imprison them if they continued to pester the old king over his son's destiny. The Earth King of the Oma Kingdom even threatened to take Xi where he could train under the safety of the Oma Kingdom. He believed the Earth King could end the thousand-year-old civil war, and that for Ku to hide him from the world was selfish. Xi wasn't even able to contact Arrluk his predecessor. Surely, they made a mistake by naming Xi the Avatar, Xi eavesdropped from the bedroom wing of the palace. His father argued with the sages again they told him that Tiandi could curse the Tong Dynasty and cast Ku and his bloodline into the Fog of Lost Souls for eternity if he ignored Xi's destiny as the Avatar.

When Xi learned he was the Avatar that evening he fled his father's grasp and left him a note. Xi traveled the world mastering the four elements while father hired elite and infamous bounty hunters to hunt down Xi and bring him back to Ku. His responsibility was to the throne not to the world as the Avatar.

Later Life[]

When Xi spent the first six months of his waterbending training in the Northern Water Tribe, Ku passed away from a heart attack on the throne. The healers were unable to bring the Earth King back to life. Xi's mother took the throne as regent queen in 1118 BG and ruled for three years before Baojun took it in 1115 BG when Xi's mother stepped down and gave it to someone she trusted until her son returned.

When Duye poisoned Ku with black shade and almost killed him after he recovered there were side effects to his recovery from the poison. These side effects were permanent blurred vision and heart problems which later affected Ku and killed him in the end via heart attack. His legacy was honored by Xi when he took back the throne and ruled as Earth King just like his father wanted.

The robes and crown worn by Ku were buried with the king while replicas were put on display by Governor Jie Tong, in his family's museum.

Abilities[]

Ku was born an earthbender and mastered his element at the age of 14. As a master earthbender, he learned from sandbenders to sandbend and learned me tricks used by the sandbenders. His father as Earth King controlled some states along with the Si Wong state during his reign and forced the sandbenders to fight in the civil war.
