"We've been scouting this region for days. There's a wall stretching along the entire border and patrols guarding every part of it. That checkpoint is the only way out. [...] If any of us want to get out of the Earth Empire alive, we'll have to trust each other." |
— Baraz explaining the escape plan to Bolin and Varrick. |
The Earth Empire fugitives were Earth Kingdom citizens of Fire Nation and Water Tribe heritage who were imprisoned by the Earth Empire due to their ancestry. At some point in 171 AG, they managed to break themselves out. The group was led by Baraz and Ahnah.[1]
History[]
Before the beginning of the Earth Empire, these firebenders and waterbenders lived in the Earth Kingdom states. After Kuvira brought about the beginning of the empire, their states were purged by her military and these benders were subsequently imprisoned due to being of non-Earth Kingdom origin. However, they managed to break themselves out of the prison and hide in a big forest. The forest, however, was bordered by the Earth Empire's security forces. The group managed to find the sole checkpoint in the border. They then devised a plan to trap some Earth Empire soldiers to make their escape.
Days later, Bolin and Iknik Blackstone Varrick, who became fugitives themselves as result of deserting the Empire, fell for their trap. After they were released from their trap, the group's leaders Baraz and Ahnah explained to the duo about the actual situation of the people in the re-education camps. They later revealed their motive to use the duo to make their escape. However, before they could act, the group was cornered by Bolin who used lavabending to keep the group at bay. After each side understood the other's situation, they decided to work together to make their escape. On reaching the checkpoint, Bolin and Varrick pretended to be Earth Empire soldiers taking the fugitives through the checkpoint. They almost managed to pass through the checkpoint, until Bolin and Varrick were identified. The group was quickly surrounded by the soldiers and mecha tanks and a battle ensued. During the battle, Varrick managed to create an electromagnetic pulse to disable the mecha tanks and Bolin used lavabending to drive the soldiers off and the group, along with the duo, managed to escape. Bolin and Varrick were given the offer to accompany the group on their journey north and the two accepted since they could reach Republic City via that route in order to inform the government of the incoming threat from Kuvira.[1]
During their journey, the benders passed their time narrating their stories, with Baraz being the last to do so, although the stories turned out to be incredibly boring. Varrick managed to liven up the mood by spinning a story for his next mover The Adventures of Nuktuk: Hero of the South, placing Bolin as the protagonist and having him take on Avatar Korra's past enemies: Amon, Vaatu, Unalaq, and Zaheer. At the end of the story, the group, having enjoyed it, gave a round of applause to Varrick, although it quickly died out, and they became annoyed with Bolin after he criticized the story.[2]
