Dumpling weed is a plant that grows in harsh conditions, such as rocky environments. It produces pods of edible legumes. They are known to grow in the Boiling Rock prison and the north side of Kyoshi Island. According to Suki, they are rich in nutrients.
History[]
Oyaji often gave Suki, Mingxia, and their friends the chore of collecting dumpling weed for their village. During Kyoshi Island's year of failed harvest, Oyaji's village threatened to starve, until Suki and the other Kyoshi Warriors went to collect dumpling weed on the northern part of the island to replenish their food stores.[1]
After General Onomu defected from the Fire Nation, she began slurping down a warm bowl of dumpling weed soup in an eastern Earth Kingdom town as she waited for a group employed by the Earth Kingdom government to escort her to Ba Sing Se.[2]
The plant also grew across various parts of the Boiling Rock's prison complex, including the courtyard and one of the prison cells. Suki noticed the plant growing under her bed as soon as she was confined to the prison, and planned to use the plant to build a community in the prison and grow contraband food in order to sustain their energy more than the prison slop would allow. Along with Biyu and several other prisoners such as Qing and Han, she spent two weeks cultivating a hidden garden of dumpling weed located through a secret passage in the laundry room. The warden conducted a surprise inspection of the laundry room, but Han kept Suki, Biyu, and the garden hidden.[1]
When Suki was trying to slip Qing his rations of dumpling weed in the cafeteria, one of the guards approached, looking for contraband. The other prisoners rallied around Qing before they could inspect his bowl, leading to a fight before backup arrived and could take the prisoners away to their cells. Reconsidering the plan after the fight, Biyu chose to betray Suki and reveal the location of the garden to the warden, and was rewarded for her efforts with certain privileges, while Suki was confronted about the dumpling weed by the warden before being sent to solitary confinement for two weeks.[1]
Trivia[]
- The dumpling weed was initially planned to be a root plant, but later switched to a legume as the latter would have more realistic chances of survival inside the harsh volcanic Boiling Rock prison.[3]
