Duga was a pirate who captained the Burning Wave, a ship that made up part of the Crimson Sails Armada. As a profit-oriented pirate, Duga commandeered the ship that made the most money in the entire Crimson Sails Armada, dabbling in mercantile pursuits as well as plunder.
History[]
Duga grew up poor, but joined the Fire Navy to hone his firebending abilities. He was mercilessly bullied by fellow crewmates who did not understand his amazing gift due to his sensitive nature, and ended up deserting to escape the torment. Rather than return home a failure, Duga swore to make something of himself and joined up with a crew of pirates the first chance he got.
The young man proved himself invaluable to the crew of the Burning Wave by setting merchant boats alight with his bending while the pirates plundered to their hearts' content. Duga slowly worked his way through the ranks until he was first mate, when he then bit his tongue as the captain squandered the wealth they stole. Eventually, the foolish former captain died on an expedition, leaving Duga in charge.
Waiting for the moment his entire life, Duga set about changing the Burning Wave for the better. He soon won the loyalty of his crew, who doubted his leadership skills at first, but grew to cherish their captain as their pockets grew heavy with coin.[1] Under Duga's leadership, the Burning Wave made more money than any other Crimson Sails pirate faction during the Hundred Year War by also dabbling in mercantile pursuits, but they only shared the bare minimum with the Armada. Their greed made them an object of scorn on Crimson Sails, but enterprising pirates who actually wanted to make a profit knew that Duga and the Burning Wave were their best shot.[2]
Duga used to have a good working relationship with Tengfei, leader of the Renegade Phoenix, and some even said that the two were in love. However, the relationship soured when Duga left Tengfei stranded on a mission, because she was caught by guards. Some would have made the choice to go back for her, but Duga placed profit above any loyalty he had toward a fellow pirate.[1] Crews of the Burning Wave and the Renegade Phoenix came to blame one another for more than a few blundered missions, and they continued to clash after the war was over.[2]
After the Hundred Year War came to an end, Duga saw that his crew could make even more money smuggling goods between nations and take advantage of the world's relative peace.[2] The crew of the Burning Wave thus wished to transition to mercantile profiteering, but the "easy" profits from raiding were too tempting for them to stop their piracy and invest in their business.[2][1] Duga and the Burning Wave had to make a choice about their future, as they wanted the benefits of both options without the costs of fully committing to either option.[2]
Personality[]
Duga was considered sensitive in his youth, which led to his desertion from the navy. He wished to see prosperity above all else, and was driven to secure his financial safety.[1]
Abilities[]
Duga was an accomplished firebender. He was able to swipe at his enemies with a blade of flame, as well as pouring fire upon a target.[1]
