Duels are battles fought by at least two individuals, and they can be considered a form of recreation, a way of settling disputes, or a training tool for students who are developing skills in a particular art.
Duels may be fought to the death in the most extreme cases, or may simply be friendly spars fought to pass time. Duels are practiced by a variety of cultures, but they are most notably seen in the Fire Nation in the form of an Agni Kai.
The following is a list of known duels that occurred in 66 BG.
Known duels[]
Clash between Sozin's team and Western Kingdom Trading Company guards[]
Combatants: Sozin, Kozaru, Dalisay, and two Western Kingdom Trading Company guards
Victor: Sozin's team
Casualties: Two Western Kingdom Trading Company guards killed
Seeking the mysterious powers described by Ashō in 66 BG, Prince Sozin alongside his followers Kozaru and Dalisay explored Lambak Island's wilderness, seeking a village of natives. After hours of futile searching, the trio rested at a forest clearing before being surprised by two wild moo-sows bursting through the nearby undergrowth. The animals were followed by two disheveled soldiers,[1] belonging to a small expedition of the Western Kingdom Trading Company.[2] Immediately believing them hostile, Dalisay and Kozaru attacked them with a rope-dart and firebending respectively. Though Sozin initially attempted to prevent an escalation, one soldier attacked him with earthbending. Afterward, the prince dueled one soldier, while Kozaru and Dalisay fought the other. Though the soldiers fiercely defended themselves, they were no match for the martial skills of the trio, and ultimately slain.[1]
Fake assassination attempt on Avatar Roku[]
Combatants: Roku, Ta Min, Gyatso, and Kozaru's earthbending agent
Victor: Gyatso victorious in combat, but agent's mission succeeded
After his failed exploration of Lambak Island, Sozin attempted to manipulate his friend, Avatar Roku, to aid him in the developing Lambak Island conflict. At the time engaged in his airbending training, Roku initially declined to intervene, causing Sozin to ask his ally Kozaru to organize a fake assassination attempt targeting the Avatar. The attack was not supposed to hurt Roku, only to motivate him to involve himself in the conflict. Kozaru hired an earthbending criminal to carry out this mission.[3] The agent ambushed Roku and Ta Min - who accompanied the Avatar by chance - near the Southern Air Temple. Though Roku and Ta Min managed to strike back with firebending, the agent used his bending to seemingly bury the pair alive.[4] Before the two could suffocate, Gyatso heard the attack and came to their aid. Using airbending, the young monk defeated the earthbending agent and dug out Roku and Ta Min. The three then questioned the agent who falsely claimed that he was acting on Earth King Jialun's orders before escaping. Enraged that the Earth Monarch was trying to kill him, Roku subsequently decided to help Sozin after all,[5] just as the prince had wanted.[3]
Malaya's last stand[]
Victor: Sozin
Casualties: Malaya dies
After agreeing to help Sozin in navigating the caves of Lambak Island to find and rescue Roku from clan chief Ulo, Malaya led the prince into underground tunnels. In truth, she intended to murder Sozin, having recognized his malign influence on the Avatar and his devious nature.[6][7] However, the Fire National knew that Malaya despised him and mentally prepared himself for an ambush.[8]
The two eventually came across a wall of rubble, with Malaya realizing that this potentially provided her (as a nonbender) with the best chance at killing the master firebender and covering it up as an accident. Sozin blasted a small opening through the blockage with firebending, but demanded to go first. She decided to attack Sozin from behind as his attention turned to the cavern, and swiped a sharp rock fragment off the ground. As she resolved to kill the prince, Sozin was waiting for her on the other side of the passageway with an angled attack stance. He unleashed a fire kick on her that singed her cheek, causing Malaya to stumble backwards. She tried to spring forward with the rock shard and managed to wound him, but he knocked her arm aside and cracked his head against hers. As Malaya's defense fell, the Sozin punched her in the gut before using his firebending to burn her alive.[7]
