Dairin was chancellor of the Fire Nation who served during the reign of Fire Lord Zoryu. As one of the world's foremost Avatar scholars, he served as the Fire Lord's Head Palace Historian.[1]

History[]

In 295 BG, Dairin welcomed Avatar Kyoshi and her secretary Jinpa to the Fire Nation upon their arrival for the upcoming Festival of Szeto. Kyoshi greeted him in turn, asking to see the Fire Lord. Dairin responded that he was indisposed at that moment, but that she would see the Fire Lord that evening.

Rangi approached the chancellor, reminding him that the palace tour was the first item on his itinerary. He guided the trio to the portrait gallery, where, upon request, he informed Kyoshi about the life and accomplishments of Avatar Szeto. Kyoshi also took note of Fire Lord Chaeryu's portrait, asking Dairin about the symbolism of the camellia and peony flowers. Aghast at the recent addition that had not been known to him, he requested that the Avatar tell no-one else about the painting.[1]

By evening, Dairin approached Kyoshi's chambers, informing her that the small gathering between the Fire Lord and the Avatar had become a larger garden party of some five hundred Fire Nation nobles. After the end of a small performance, Dairin approached the trio, advising the Avatar that the etiquette was to then mingle in the direction of the Fire Lord.[3]

When Yun arrived at the party and held the nobles hostage, Dairin and his guards arrived in the portrait gallery after the earthbender killed Lu Beifong. Although they believed the false Avatar to be without bendables, Yun bent the pigment in the portraits of the Fire Avatars, smashing the blob on the floor and sending sharp pellets flying at Kyoshi, Dairin, and his men. As the chancellor had not worn armor, he was mortally wounded, and even the world-renowned healer Atuat considered him to be already gone as she arrived on the scene.[4][5]

After Dairin's death, his student, Caoli succeeded him as chancellor.[2]

Personality[]

Dairin's great passion and vocation was history. This led him to appreciate the inestimable value of the paintings in the Royal Gallery and to be willing to defend it body and soul. At times he seemed quite sullen, but inwardly he was happy with the praise, although he managed to maintain his professionalism. The clan conflict that escalated during Fire Lord Zoryu's reign caused him great concern.
