Chameleon Bay is a small inlet located near the northern waters of the Eastern Sea in the northeastern Earth Kingdom. It is the mouth of a river that leads directly to the outskirts of Ba Sing Se.

By the 3rd century BG, Port Chameleon Bay was a notable town in the region.[1]

History[]

During the time of Avatar Kyoshi, the Port Chameleon Bay area became the main base of operation for the Flying Opera Company after the deaths of their leaders, Jesa and Hark, and subsequent reduction of influence in the rest of the Earth Kingdom. Madam Qiji's Teahouse, which was situated in the area, became the daofei's headquarter in 296 BG. It was then that Avatar Kyoshi and Rangi traveled to the bay by flying bison to meet with the company and left again on Pengpeng after Governor Deng's police confronted the daofei at the teahouse.[1][2]

Four centuries later, after Team Avatar informed Earth King Kuei about the Day of Black Sun and the planned Invasion of the Fire Nation, Sokka and Katara were informed, through reports confiscated by the Dai Li, that their father was at Chameleon Bay.[3] Sokka, forced to leave Katara behind, went alone to meet his father. After reuniting with Hakoda, the pair planned to combat some Fire Nation naval forces, but Sokka was forced to leave due to Aang's premonition of Katara's endangerment.[4]

After Ba Sing Se fell to the Fire Nation, the Avatar and his friends fled back to the bay to rejoin Hakoda and flee the kingdom.[5] The fall of Ba Sing Se meant that Fire Nation reinforcements would be on their way to support the occupation, so the bay was promptly abandoned.[6]

Water Tribe camp[]

Water Tribe camp

Southern Water Tribe warriors established a camp on the bay's shores.

A small camp was located on the shores of Chameleon Bay where the warriors of the Southern Water Tribe met to recuperate, eat, and discuss battle plans. Water Tribe soldiers sharpened or cleaned their weapons outside their small tents, whilst the leaders of the tribe, including Hakoda, usually took shelter in a much larger tent, going over battle plans.[7] Their main goal was to ensure that no Fire Nation naval forces penetrated the bay, or they would be within Ba Sing Se's immediate area.

Trivia[]

  • In Avatar: The Last Airbender, no trace of Port Chameleon Bay is seen, even though the town was seemingly located in the same area where Hakoda's camp was later erected. Though not officially confirmed, it is possible that the settlement was abandoned and reclaimed by nature in the four centuries in between, especially as Kyoshi noted that Port Chameleon Bay was a mostly ramshackle shantytown of wooden huts and tents, with few stone structures, already appearing to be in terminal decline during her visit.[1]
