Buo Ren was a Earth Kingdom Army officer during the 1st century BG. As captain, she was eventually appointed commander of the small garrison of an Earth Kingdom outpost on Jasmine Island, where she was drawn into a political intrigue.[1]
History[]
After joining the Earth Kingdom military, Buo Ren distinguished herself and rose in the ranks until being promoted to captain. Eventually, she was assigned to the small garrison on Jasmine Island, an island-state which was an Earth Kingdom protectorate. As a staunch loyalist of her nation as well as a follower of law and order, she strove to lead the local troops in accordance to the old treaty between the Earth Kingdom and the Jasmine Islanders.[1][2] She thus tried to stay out of the natives' politics and focus on just leading her troops in a disciplined manner. She was popular among most of the garrison's soldiers.[1]

Buo Ren oversaw the small military outpost on Jasmine Island.
However, Buo Ren soon noticed how her civilian counterpart, Magistrate Emerald, was gradually increasing the Earth Kingdom's influence on the island. Having lived among the natives for some time, Buo Ren felt conflicted over this as she respected the locals. However, she was also not willing to act against Emerald as long as he remained within the constraints of his position and acted in the Earth Kingdom's interests.[1] Unbeknownst to her, Emerald was utterly abusing his position to undermine Jasmine Island's independence and effectively organizing a creeping coup. To avoid the captain's attention, the magistrate always sent Buo Ren on some mission when he conducted especially egregious abuses or covert operations.[1][2]
Eventually, two Guiding Wind members, Fengying and Sakuru, broke into the Earth Kingdom outpost to find evidence for Emerald's illegal activities, but were caught by his personal guards. In response, Buo Ren increased the outpost's security. Meanwhile, the magistrate framed the two activists as devious criminals, and declared his intention to send them to the Earth Kingdom mainland to stand trial.[3][4] Despite Emerald's claims, Buo Ren treated Fengying and Sakuru as dignified prisoners, already distrusting the magistrate's motives.[5] Guiding Wind leaders Khandro and Zeisan subsequently traveled to Jasmine Island to seek their allies' freedom. Buo Ren and some of her soldiers were present as the two revolutionaries appealed to the island's leadership in the Council Hall, unaware that two of the three council members were effectively controlled by Emerald.[4]
As the meeting at the Council Hall was ongoing, a group of Jasmine Island protectors, namely Ukiuk, Qi Wei, Pushi, Sukaya, and Baljin,[4][6] infiltrated the Earth Kingdom outpost. Upon being notified, Emerald demanded that Buo Ren impose martial law on the island to catch the perpetrators, and she agreed.[7] Ultimately, Emerald's attempted takeover was exposed and the situation of the island returned to the previous status quo.[8]
Personality[]
Buo Ren was dutiful and honorable, seeking to serve in the military to honor the Earth Kingdom. In this regard, she strove to be fair-minded and lawful, which contributed to her becoming increasingly wary of Magistrate Emerald's activities.[1]
Abilities[]
Buo Ren was a highly respected officer and a decent earthbender. She was capable of creating an earth armor and large rock columns.[1]
