Maiko not getting married in the future also stems from the fact that they have such an off again on again relationship,
I honestly can't imagine the relationship really ever working unless Mai completely changes her personality into someone she isn't. And you should never ever ever have to downright entirely alter with what a character stands for just for a love interest. Ever.

Two words: Ross and Rachel.

I agree 100%. As much as I would like for Maiko to be endgame, I just don't it would happen. It's just really not a functional relationship. I'll just have to stick with Maiko fanfiction :T
DarkNet1 wrote: 'Subtle romance'? Uh, Sokka and Yue were pretty much having an affair, and their relationship wasn't anywhere near subtle. Maiko not getting married in the future also stems from the fact that they have such an off again on again relationship,
Oh, it was subtle in the fact that it didn't get much traction on account of the situation they were in with the engagement and the siege. And became heartbreaking because of the sacrifice.
As for Maiko, on and off relationships can only go for so long before being one or the other permanently. I'm hoping it returns to the on aspect soon.

Said who? All the dysfuncational couples I can think off usually remain dysfuncational.
But there's always a chance that they change and cease being that way.
Today's relationships tend to be dysfunctional when different personalities clash and don't connect well.
This is my main problem with Maiko. I think they just need to have a long discussion to work things out, and find a way to communicate better with each other. I'm hoping they figure something out.. On a side note, is it just me or does Mai seem like she's a tiny bit more expressive in the comics than in the show?
She seems to be oddly showing more emotion in the comics than in her whole time in ATLA.
Mai has always had to be the quiet girl because of her father's political career, so she can't be emotional.
