"Beach Wars" is a comic short written and drawn by Meredith McClaren. It was released by Dark Horse Comics on May 7, 2022 as a part of Free Comic Book Day.[1]
Overview[]
Korra, Asami, and the rest of Team Avatar are having a nice, relaxing day at the beach ... until Katara and Toph incite an all-out prank war.[2]
Synopsis[]
The comic opens on a beach in the United Republic. Korra and Asami are sunbathing, and Ikki and Meelo are playing on the beach. Meanwhile, Bolin is bending a sand sculpture for Opal, Jinora is reading a book, and Katara and Toph are sitting on reclining chairs. Katara remarks how good it is to see her old friend, and Toph says that she does not like being back in Republic City, but that it is worth it for being able to spend more time with her granddaughter.
Bolin sees Opal laughing and thinks that she cannot take his sculpture of her seriously, though she says that she finds it beautiful, and she is laughing about the mustache scribbled on his face. Bolin notes that Meelo had pranked him in the morning, and that nobody can take their eyes off him for a second. However, he says that the mustache makes him feel more "distinguished", at which Opal lets out a slight snort of laughter.
Katara reminisces with Toph about the time when they could not go a few days without trying to one-up each other, and Toph audibly laughs. They mention how Toph tried to bend pebbles up Katara's nose, and how Katara icebent a slide underneath Toph so that she fell into a boar-q-pine den. Katara remembers Toph metalbending her furniture to the ceiling, and Toph remembers Katara hiding a turtle duck in her office. Both agree that they were "good times", and they begin to brainstorm a way to continue having a prank war.
Asami notices something happening, but Korra just wants to relax. After Katara and Toph make sure they are "really doing" the prank war, they call for all the children and tell them to huddle up. Asami worriedly tells Korra that "the grandmas are plotting", but Korra simply wants to relax during her vacation.
Katara tells Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo to prank Toph, though Jinora is confused why they are doing it. Meelo says he can give her a mustache, but that he does not want people to think that he is a one-note pranker. Katara tells them about the supposed gravity of the situation by telling them that if she knows anything, it is the "maniacal mind of Toph Beifong", and tells them that she is "conniving" with Opal and Bolin.
Meanwhile, Opal is confused that Toph is asking her to prank children, but Toph says that she primarily wants them to prank Katara, though she does not care if there is any collatoral damage. When Opal asks why, Toph says that getting a rise out of Katara has been her proudest tradition, and that it has been years since she was last able to do it. She tells Opal that she is a "stick in the mud", and that riling her up is almost as hard as it is with Lin, to which Bolin agrees. Bolin comes up with an idea to secretly bend their towels out from underneath them, but Opal notes that he is only just getting the hang of sandbending. Bolin goes on to come up with the idea of convincing others that the beach is infested with "sandmoles", notoriously famous for stealing people's towels. He then goes on to say that the only thing to deter the creature will be the smell of garlic, and that the airbender children will have to eat heaps of it to keep their towels, with Bolin's side revealing there are no towels once they begin to be annoyed with how much they smell. Toph and Opal are very skeptical, and Toph sarcastically asks her granddaughter if Bolin really is the "boy for her".
Meelo then thinks about feeding spicy bean cakes to a bunch of peli-puffins and then startling them to fly over Toph and poop everywhere. Opal considers mixing wasabi in their shaved ice. Meanwhile, Jinora thinks of blowing sand over all their food. Bolin thinks about replacing all their suntan oil with flaming hot pepper jelly, and when they start thinking they are getting sunburned, they will put on more and more oil, compounding the problem. Toph grins, saying that she changed her mind and that Bolin is a "keeper" for Opal.
Korra is getting more and more frustrated while trying to relax. Deciding that there is no way that it can end well for her, she decides that it is "Avatar intervention time" and tells everyone to "chill out", waterbending a huge wave that crashes onto the beach, with Asami looking startled. Toph grins as she is covered with seaweed, and tells Korra that she has made a "terrible mistake". Katara tells Meelo to begin feeding the peli-puffins, Opal and Bolin starts running away, while Asami starts panicking and declares herself a "non-combatant neutral party", while Korra notes that she suddenly regrets her actions.[2]
