The Band of the Scorpion was a small daofei gang of about 12 outlaws that operated at the borders of the Si Wong Desert during the late 4th or early 3rd century BG. The group's members felt a strong sense of camaraderie and rather died than leave anyone behind. This devotion to one another was eventually exploited by Jianzhu who hunted the Band of the Scorpion down and killed all its members.[1]
History[]
The Band of the Scorpion was one of many daofei gangs which became bolder and more active after the early death of Avatar Kuruk in 312 BG. As a result, it was targeted by Kuruk's former earthbending teacher Jianzhu as he attempted to maintain order across the Earth Kingdom. The gang attempted to evade him by traveling across the desert's inhospitable border regions. As they had to regularly stop by the few local watering holes, Jianzhu managed to tail them.[1]
As the chase went on, the Band of the Scorpion was slowed down due to two of its members getting foot rot. Rather than abandoning them, the group's members fashioned litters and carried their two sick comrades across the desert. The group knew that Jianzhu would probably catch up with them, but they refused to go back to their vows of brotherhood. Accordingly, the earthbending master eventually caught up with them and massacred the outlaws.[1]
Legacy[]
Despite killing them, Jianzhu would continue to hold the Band of the Scorpion at high regard for the rest of his life, admiring their willingness to die for each other. He eventually told their story to the criminal Guan, using the group's fate to manipulate him into revealing information about his own gang, the Autumn Bloom Society.[1]
