Bai was a Fire Sage of the Fire Nation Capital during the last stages of the Hundred Year War. He was responsible for guarding several priceless artifacts.
History[]
Unlike most Fire Nation citizens, Bai was well informed about the war crimes which his country had committed during the Hundred Year War. He consequently took it upon himself to ensure that this information remained secret for others during the late rule of Fire Lord Azulon and early reign of Fire Lord Ozai. Bai fiercely guarded all artifacts and documents at the High Temple which could contradict the Fire Nation's official propaganda.[2]
In the night before Ozai's coronation as Fire Lord, Bai captured intruders who had snuck into the Dragonbone Catacombs. This group, consisting of Teek, Aniki, Wenli, Xaipan, Sunlin, and Yinzin, had sought to steal a scroll from Sozin's time containing secret information. Even though Bai had them imprisoned, the six broke out and escaped with the scroll thanks to aid by Bai's fellow Fire Sage, Niuan.[3] Upon learning of this, Bai chased after them.[2][3]
Personality[]
Bai was completely loyal to the Fire Lords despite knowing the true motives of the Fire Nation's imperialistic war. Though not proud of the crimes committed by his country, such as the Air Nomad Genocide, Bai believed that the Fire Nation's people as well as culture were naturally stronger than those of the other nations. According to this world view, wars of conquest were a natural consequence. The Fire Sage considered this logic to be mere pragmatism, independent of any moral questions.[2]
However, Bai was well aware that other Fire Nation citizens would not accept his logic so readily. As a result, he believed that propaganda and lies were neccessary to ensure a stable country, and that normal citizens had be be "protected" from the truth. Instead of pondering the war's morality, the commoners should focus on how to best serve their nation. To ensure his country's and government's survival, Bai was even willing to destroy the priceless artifacts under his watch or murder anyone who was not be trusted with the information they contained.[2]
Abilities[]
Bai was a firebender capable of a move known as "fire pinwheel", with which he could get closer to opponents while shooting fire discs at them.[2]
