The Ba Sing Se Times - Issue 31[]
We're approaching that day again, and I'd love to get a couple of fanon reviews from you guys if possible. The issue is looking very sad and lonely at the moment. :( Feel free to get it to me anytime in between now and Saturday afternoon. :) Rassilon of Old (Wall - Help) 08:27, September 14, 2011 (UTC)
- If I am correct, Millennia's doing one on The First Avatar. I think I might put something else together for the issue, because I'm not doing a review. We'll see. --BlackMonkey - Talk 19:42, September 14, 2011 (UTC)
Adding a Notice ?[]
If all the reviews we should make should be positive reviews, then what's the point of the user group ?
I think we should add a friendly notice saying, for example :
What do you think ? --Bahjy1 (talk!! - fanon) 06:55, September 17, 2011 (UTC)
- Speaking as one who takes great interest in this user group, yes, that would be an excellent idea. I myself, grow tired of reading (and writing :P) reviews that are always positive. I love to see a review that isn't good every now and then, and it also helps the writer. However, speaking as a fanon admin, I would suggest you use the 'sandwhich technique', structuring a review as: something good, something bad, and then something good again.
- That way the author of the reviewed fanon feels good about their fanon, as it appears to have been given a good review as that is their final impression of it. However you have also included the bad stuff in the middle, so the author can take that away and improve. Something else, be polite when pointing out a flaw, and then suggest how to improve it. For example;
- The Legend of Akrotiri has many characters, but this seems to have detracted from the story itself. Due to the large amount of main characters, I feel that as I read the fanon, I found the characters to be very dull, none were unique, and they were badly dialogued, due to the author having too many characters to handle. A fix to this, would be sitting down with a sheet of paper for each character, and just draw a mind map of each character's history, motivation, and their personalities, and then you have a clear definition of each character, and should you forget a particular character's motivation, you can reference the sheet.
- Does that make sense? Rassilon of Old (Wall - Help) 08:22, September 17, 2011 (UTC)
Good point Rass, I still need the opinions of BM and M2 --Bahjy1 (talk!! - fanon) 12:19, September 17, 2011 (UTC)
Great idea, Bahjy! I always feel bad putting low scores on reviews, but I think this will work. I'm all for it! -- BlackMonkey Talk Fanon 12:23, September 17, 2011 (UTC)
| Remember, when you sign your fanon under any of the member's schedules, you will receive an accurate review of your fanon. Please don't take offense if the review wasn't positive. We always give advice! - The Fanon Review Squad |

Notice Update![]
All members of the Fanon Review Squad, come for a special announcement! Due to the previous discussion above, and the support from Rass, Millennia, and I, a new law has been set. In each review you make, please add the following notice to the top of the blog post:
This review was conducted by the Fanon Review Squad and reflects our best judgment of writing and fanon authorship quality. Please don't take offense if the review wasn't positive. We always give advice!
|
To do so, simply copy and paste {{FRSNotice}} onto the page. Thank you.
Onto another debate. Should we add a notice like this above the schedules on the main page? I think it would be a good idea, but it kind of messes up the layout of the page. Tell me what you think.
-- BlackMonkey Talk Fanon 14:49, September 18, 2011 (UTC)
Yeah I think we should add the one you created in the previous chapter of this page_talk to the top of the FRS Page (this page), and I'll make sure I use that on my next review --Bahjy1 (talk!! - fanon) 17:27, September 18, 2011 (UTC)
Done. Check out the main page. Any thoughts? --BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 23:49, September 18, 2011 (UTC)
I re-read the Information on the main page, check this out :
| "The Fanon Review Squad is a new user group of successful fanon writers..." |
| — |
Am I considered a successful fanon writer ? I don't think so --Bahjy1 (talk!! - fanon) 12:11, September 19, 2011 (UTC)
You're semi-successful. You've made it through chapters and struggled and learned. Your fanon is actually pretty good. Anyway, are we going to put "The Fanon Review Squad is a new user group of unsuccessful fanon writers" on our main page? --BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 20:05, September 19, 2011 (UTC)
LoL. I just think that me and my fanon doesn't deserve to have the adjective "Successful", but anyway - it's your decision. --Bahjy1 (talk!! - fanon) 13:47, September 20, 2011 (UTC)
Hey, this is all undercover. You shouldn't be worrying about not being good enough for the group. We let you in, so just keep up the work you've been doing. Don't try and rat yourself out of being a member. --BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 18:55, September 20, 2011 (UTC)
I never said I was going out of the group! --Bahjy1 (talk!! - fanon) 12:20, September 21, 2011 (UTC)
New Signup Method - Please Give Suggestions[]
Hello, Squad. It has come to my attention that we are pretty good on members for this group, and I have been having a hard time declining joining requests. So I have came up with a new method. We will only have three members at a time, and we will only give directions to join when there is an open space out of those three. When Millennia, Bahjy, or I eventually quit, which hopefully won't be soon, we'll put the part below on the group page.
==Joining== You want to be a part of this band of high-quality fanon reviewers, eh? The first step in joining is to pass the following requirements: * Be an active user. * Have no history of vandalism. * Reads, writes, or works with fanon in any way. Have you got those? If you do, and you want to be a part of the Fanon Review Squad, all that is left is just [[Avatar Wiki talk:Fanon Review Squad|dropping the Review Squad a message]]. They'll see what you've done, and might just add your name to the list above.
As you can see, I have changed the sign-up method even further, and now users who want to join (when there is an open space) will leave a message on this page. Other various changes have been made to the main page. Any suggestions? --BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 19:57, September 22, 2011 (UTC)
I think a new user has to have some blog posts done so we can see how well he writes and make him do a test review (the test not SO necessary) --Bahjy1 (talk!! - fanon) 06:50, September 23, 2011 (UTC)
Fanon Review Contest?[]
I've been thinking of a crazy idea, and you can criticize me if you want. What if we hosted a Fanon Review Contest? It could get a bit hectic, and I definetly wouldn't do it for a couple weeks, but it would go like this. Users from all over the wiki would make fanon reviews over a course of two or three weeks, reviewing different stories every time that weren't there own. At the end of a certain timeframe, whoever entered the most reviews would win, and we would hand out userboxes to them and commemorate them on the main page. Not only will The Fanon Review Squad be advertised, but stories across the wiki will get a big burst of reviews. Everyone gets something in the end. Any thoughts, suggestions, ideas, or concerns? --BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 02:14, October 12, 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, me neither. Just thought I'd suggest it because the idea came up. --BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 00:37, October 17, 2011 (UTC)
Holidays[]
Wow, would you just look at our schedules?! Filled up to December! Congrats to everyone! Because of this, I'm proposing that we end our 2011 schedule with December 17, meaning that our next open spots would be in 2012. This would be done to allow us to take a well deserved break and spend our holidays with our families. Thoughts? Millennia2 00:09, October 17, 2011 (UTC)
- I definitely agree. I've got Avatar Rhythm plans for the end of December also, so that'll be a bonus for me, too. --BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 00:37, October 17, 2011 (UTC)
- Kudos to you guys. :) I'm thinking of doing a New Years Eve BSST edition, and if possible, could we get perhaps a general review of the Fanon Portal? By that, I mean what you three found the Fanon authors were best at, what they could use some improvement on, Fanon highlights of the year, what Fanon you look forward to most in the new year, etc etc. Thoughts? Rassilon of Old (Wall - Help) 23:22, October 21, 2011 (UTC)
- I think that's a good idea. On a completely semi-completely different subject, what if we had an award - not necessarily hosted by us, that was like, The Fanon of the Year? I don't know, but yeah, I'll definitely look into that and contact the others when the time comes. --BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 11:57, October 22, 2011 (UTC)
The Ba Sing Se Times, Issue 33[]
I see you guys have at least two reviews planned for this week's BSST, so thanks for that. If I could get them before tonight (which is about six hours for me) that would be great. If worst comes to worst, you might have to give them to 888. Thanks for doing such a great job guys. :) Rassilon of Old (Wall - Help) 23:22, October 21, 2011 (UTC)
- So when is the BSST going to be? The 22nd or the 29th? I've given you a non-fanon column already, I know that, grr, I don't have much time and missed your six-hour deadline. Has Millennia given you anything yet? --BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 11:59, October 22, 2011 (UTC)
- If so I haven't received it. In any case, deadlines for the BSST are completely lenient, as you may have noticed. Rassilon of Old (Wall - Help) 12:31, October 22, 2011 (UTC)
Slider[]
Dear Fanon Review Squad:
Since Fanon Administrator Rassilon of Old is becoming inactive in his position and the "Undiscovered Fanon" series will not continue for the foreseeable future, the fourth fanon slider image - that which belongs to the BSST - will be given to whichever fanon happens to be reviewed by you on BSST issue dates. Since the latest BSST issue did not contain a review, Dancing Shadows will continue to hold the spot until the next issue.
--AvatarRokus Ghost (Message me • Read my fanon)
03:57, October 25, 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, that's cool. I like Dancing Shadows, personally, so I don't mind it being featured for to long. I've just fixed my BSST reviews on my schedule, so everything works out good. Thanks for checking in. --BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 11:31, October 25, 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry Bahjy, they probably won't. Although with new fanon admins and BSST editors coming up, who knows, maybe we'll need you to crank out a couple reviews for the newsletter. Stay tuned. --BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 18:50, October 26, 2011 (UTC)
- Well since I'm running the undiscovered fanon section on BSST, I'm okay with BSST edition reviews. But you are a better reviewer than me so.. Yes. You should have your reviews on the slider. You're the boss anyway, you are the founder of this group. -- 15:02, October 28, 2011 (UTC)

Not Happy At All (Please Contribute)[]
Well, the new sentence cases are finally being uploaded around the wiki, but wow, the new Fanon review squad just, that's not right. That looks so... bad. Seriously, I hate the title now. There's grammar, and then there's logic. The fanon review squad is an organization. What if we starting typing up Burger King and Burger king and McDonalds as Mcdonalds and Dunking Donuts and Dunkin donuts? I know what you are going to say - I should have voted in the forum to stop this before the policy came through. I think the articles being uncapitalized was helpful, but, I don't know. As the user group I founded, big bolded "Fanon review squad"s everywhere just doesn't seem right. --BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 11:41, November 1, 2011 (UTC)
- Shouldn't it be capitalized? Technically its the name of an organization. --AvatarRokus Ghost (Message me • Read my fanon)
11:50, November 1, 2011 (UTC)
- It should be capitalized. Contact Thailog. Rassilon of Old (Wall - Help) 12:05, November 1, 2011 (UTC)
- Yes It Should Be Capitalized :) -- 14:56, November 1, 2011 (UTC)
Should I ?[]
I am now doing undiscovered fanon.. should I annex it to the FRS ? so the fanon section in BSST will be totally OWNED and CONTROLLED by us. MUAHAHAHAHA! No really, should I ? -- 07:14, November 5, 2011 (UTC)
- Hmm... I don't know. The whole point of undiscovered fanons are to advertise the great stories which are lacking views - if users can request their fanon to given this it wouldn't be the same. As for the FRS taking control of the whole fanon editorial - Lets work on our evil laughs and then get started. :) --BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 15:53, November 5, 2011 (UTC)
New Promotional Idea[]
So, a lot of members of our community (both newcomers and long time wikians) often search for or ask others which fanon should they read next. I think I have an easy way to answer their questions. I propose that the fanon review squad post the top 10 highest scoring fanons in their reviews (or 15, or 20, whatever). This could help readers decide what to read next! What do you guys think? Omashu Rocks (talk-fanon-OSP) 03:04, November 15, 2011 (UTC)
Yeah I like this. -- 14:49, November 15, 2011 (UTC)
- I took the hard worker position and collected scores, and put them in tables. Members of the squad: Update the table whenever a review is done please. -- 16:07, November 15, 2011 (UTC)
- Bahjy: For the Millenia reviews, Avatar: Guardian got a 9.7 out of 10, making it number one on his reviews. Just fyi. --I'm The Bos - Talk 16:08, November 15, 2011 (UTC)
- Err, check out the "Reviews" section, there is no Avatar: Guardian review in Millennia's section. Maybe that review was before the creation of the fanon review squad. If the last sentence was true, then sorry, I cannot list it. -- 16:27, November 15, 2011 (UTC)
- I like this. Good idea, Omashu! (This is Slash, mission complete! (talk • contribs) 22:11, November 15, 2011 (UTC))
- I'll go through my reviews before joining the Squad and update the list to include those scores.Millennia2 22:47, November 15, 2011 (UTC)
- I like the idea but I think that those scoreboards should be listed somewhere else or in a new section of the page. --BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 22:55, November 15, 2011 (UTC)
- BM : Copy paste them to wherever you want. BM & Mill : Remember changing the ranks (if there were two fanons in the rank 7.. etc..) and when two or more fanons are at the same rank, sort alphabetically (that's what I did). -- 15:03, November 17, 2011 (UTC)

This is just a suggestion, it all up to the current members of course, but seeing the users willing to join the squad and the incredible queue there is for fanons to be reviewed by one of the members, why don't you reopen the member requests? Personally, I think this will be good to get some more fanons on the radar. Reviews from the FRS are in high demand, so why not increase its reachability by adding another member? :-) (Edit, to be clear, I'm not talking about me, but just in general) Lady Lostris /

Hey! I've noticed that you guys have been really busy. I know that I haven't expressed interest earlier, but if you guys ever want another reviewer or a guest reviewer to take some stuff off your plate (a guest reviewer: unofficial member, but reviewing in the name of the FRS), I'd love to help out. If you need a resumé, I'm in a Creative Writing class and review a lot of my peers' work, and I'm also hoping to be a Creative Writing Major and looking for any opportunity to practice critiquing.
Also, I think that an easy way to go through some fanons quicker might be to have guest reviewers, like people who come in every now and again when things get backed up. Of course, you don't have to take any of this to heart. Hope you consider me for the open position in your organization--love reading you guys' reviews, so just keep up the good work!

Holiday Analaysis[]
As Rass asked and we discussed earlier in Autumn, I am planning to have the FRS create a Fanon Portal End-of-the Year Analysis, for the Ba Sing Se Times issue planned for December 31st, New Years Eve. The lists above may help us with the review. I'll officially start up an outline of what the analysis would be like in a couple days, so in the meantime try to think of the best fanons, chapters, and authors which we have reviewed in the past four months. Maybe we could have a top fanon for each area which we grade them in (creativity, story action, etc.) BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 03:19, December 22, 2011 (UTC)
- I agree. But we all have different grades. So how can we join them up ? And I think we should hurry up in the new member case because it has been ages since we decided to hire a new member. As for the analysis, I think we should take a column each and do an analysis of what have we reviewed. Or in other words : BM does analysis of what did he do, so does Mill and I. Three columns will cover the fanon editorial in BSST in addition to BSST Edition reviews and/or undiscovered fanon. Would be epic.-- 08:25, December 22, 2011 (UTC)
- It would be epic for us, but I'm not sure it would be epic for the readers of the Ba Sing Se Times who would have to read the same basic thing three times. Also, there won't be a BSST Edition that week, we're on our holiday break, that's why I thought we could host a column anyway.
- About the new member, lets just try and get one by Jan 1st, when our break ends and reviewing starts back up again. I'll try and contact Millennia, I'm sorry for being out of it lately, my family's trying to get ready for Christmas and I need to write Drowning Hope: Part 2 by the New Year, I'm really busy. And by looking at his contributions, I think Mill is really busy too. BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 12:02, December 22, 2011 (UTC)
2011 Review of the Year - Fanonical Analylis[]
Well, we've only got a couple days to get this done - we better work quickly. I've narrowed out our common reviewing categories, and am ready to work.
- BM Reviews: Story, Action, Writing, Creativity, Believability, Character Development
- Mill Reviews: Script, Story, Keeps You Reading, Creativity, Character Development, Action, General Writing
- Bahjy Reviews: Suspense, Action, Description, Creativity, Development, Final Touch
Bold elements are reviewed by all three of us, normal elements are reviewed by two, and only person reviews fanons using the italic elements. However, I was kind of hoping to give out review awards to five fanons, so I'm deciding to, along with using the bolded "action", "creativity", and "character development", also get awards for "writing" and "story" - writing because that's pretty much what Bahjy's "description" is and "story" because I'm the leader of the FRS :).
In conclusion, we will be choosing fanons with the best:
- Action
- Character Development
- Creativity
- Story
- Writing
Is that okay with everyone? If so, take a look through all the reviews you've made so far and see which ones you thought had the best of each of these elements. Report back quickly by filling out your section below, so we can get to work on narrowing the awards down.

- Hello. I see Millennia is too busy from his contributions, so I will fill out by digging into his reviews so we can release the Analysis on time. I will do it today ASAP. -- 09:08, December 30, 2011 (UTC)
- That'd be good. You can't blame Mill for being inactive - it's our holiday break and he was the one who suggested a holiday break for us. He didn't want to spend his holidays on the wiki, which I completely respect. BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 13:06, December 30, 2011 (UTC)
- I do too, but I was just saying that I will do the job for him, not blaming him! -- 14:05, December 30, 2011 (UTC)

- Just took a look at old reviews, Mill actually gave Phoenix Empire a 10 in Writing. BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 14:15, January 2, 2012 (UTC)
- BM : Old reviews by Millennia2 were before the FRS was founded. I have no links for them in the reviewing archive - they're not a part of the fanon review squad. -- 13:27, January 7, 2012 (UTC)

Okay, new semi-related topic to discuss. The Fanon Review Squad has got to do this 2011 Analysis, but we've only got 3 days left of break so we better work fast - and efficiently. Personally, I don't think we have enough time to get this done in three days, and we'd have to finish it in two if we wanted it to be in the New Year's Eve Ba Sing Se Times issue. Natsu is really hoping for this BSST to come out on the planned date, so I think we should wait to post this anaylsis (but still work on it, of course) and publish it in the beginning of January. The BSST can only come if there are enough articles, so I think we should all contribute a column, fanon or not, and make the issue happen. Also, we need to get a new member in very quickly, I'm kind of leaning towards RoF or OR. Question, comments, or concerns? BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 13:39, December 28, 2011 (UTC)
As I said above, I was wondering if I could do my test review for BSST. Mageddon725 - talk

- Sure. Send in your review to Natsu for the next BSST - Just say in it that you're test reviewing for a spot in the FRS. Sounds good to me. BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 16:44, December 28, 2011 (UTC)
- Okay, is there a specific fanon you guys had in mind, or do I just pick one? Mageddon725 - talk
16:50, December 28, 2011 (UTC)
I've left the info on your talk page, Mag, and now I'll message the other candidates on what to do. Once you've posted your test review, (or in some cases, once the BSST comes out,) either you or us will leave a link to the review in the section below:
Candidate's Test Reviews:[]
- Omashu Rocks - Avatar: The Legend of Rokan Test Review
- RageOfFluffy - Vakama's Tale Test Review
- Mageddon725 - Avatar: Legend of Rokan Test Review
- PreservationsWings - Mysteries of My Past Test Review
- MibuWolf - Journey and Return Test Review
Questions, comments, or concerns? BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 21:20, December 28, 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you for considering me for the position! I just have one question about the test review: are we allowed to review a fanon that has already been reviewed by the FRS and/or is on the waiting list to be reviewed? MibuWolf (talk • contribs) 21:26, December 28, 2011 (UTC)
- Sure. As long as it fits the guidelines I just left on your talk page. BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 21:35, December 28, 2011 (UTC)
- Mag, If you want, couldn't you also write a blog? Just a suggestion for you eager beavers. Omashu Rocks (Talk - Crossfire)

Whenever Needed[]
Hello! I know that you're not considering anyone else for this coming open spot, but whenever you have another one, I'd be happy to help. :-] Just let me know whenever you are having one! :-] Have a great day! IsabellaLover 13:45, December 28, 2011 (UTC)
Promise to everyone who's been waiting so long[]
I had a long break from reviewing, and great fanons will have to wait for the new year. I will use Millennia's technique doing triple reviews. So during the first week of 2012 your fanons' reviews will be up. SORRY! -- 15:41, December 29, 2011 (UTC)
2011 Review of the Year Award Selection[]
We'll get the Review of the Year blog out by next week - Thank you Bahjy for getting Mill's scores in. Here are the awards we will be giving out and the fanons we have selected for each.
Action Award Candidates[]
Character Development Award Candidates[]
Creativity Award Candidates[]
- Darksome Knights: Resurrection
- Mysteries of My Past
- Phoenix Empire
- And Everything in Between
- The Road that Never Ends
Story Award Candidates[]
Writing Award Candidates[]
- Emblem of the Outlaw
- Phoenix Empire
- The Avatar Rhythm
- The Adventures of Omar
So here's the deal. We need to give out each award to only one fanon. So some tough elimination is gonna have to happen. And lets try to have a different fanon earn each award, no repeats, just to be fair. Maybe we could have runner-up prizes, like, maybe whatever fanon which is last to eliminated (the one that comes in second for each award) wouldn't get a prize but could still be recognized. I don't know. Any thoughts on the choices? BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 18:01, December 30, 2011 (UTC)
- Oh, and Bahjy, mind taking a peek at this page for me? It's a beginning to what the review will look like at the end of this whole thing in it's blog. If you can think up of a column to put in there, please do. We'll plug in the awards beneath those. You'll see what I mean if you click on the link. BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 03:55, December 31, 2011 (UTC)
I will add in a column as soon as I can. As for deciding the awards, should I vote here directly or choose who to eliminate first ? -- 09:50, January 2, 2012 (UTC)
- We don't have much time for this, so here's what we'll do. Look at each of the categories and pick your top TWO favorites in each of them. In each category, I, BlackMonkey, will italicize my two favs, and Bahjy, you can bold your two favorites. That way if there is a bolded and italic fanon, it should be a top pick for the award. If Mill comes back, he can underline his top picks by adding and before and after the fanon names. Okay we got that? BM italicizes, Bahjy bolds, Mill underlines. And don't feel pressured by other member's votes. Get cracking, FRS! BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 14:08, January 2, 2012 (UTC)
- If I was to choose a fanon I don't know, I chose by what I've heard from other users. My choices are here. -- 15:04, January 2, 2012 (UTC)
Bahjy and I have discussed this and chosen winners based off our voting. The winning fanons are posted on my test wiki. If you need a link there, contact me. Mill, if you come back in time you are free to still underline your favs and we can reconsider the winners. BlackMonkey Talk - Fire & Ice 17:10, January 2, 2012 (UTC)
