The central goal of the category system is to provide navigational links to all Avatar Wiki pages in a hierarchy of categories which readers, knowing essential characteristics of a topic, can browse and quickly find sets of pages on topics that are defined by those characteristics.
Creation[]
Categories should be created when they can encompass a significant number of relevant articles. New ideas for a category should be brought to the Avatar Wiki:War Room, where the community can decide whether or not the potential new category meets the necessary standards.
Naming conventions[]
- Standard article naming conventions apply (see Manual of Style); in particular, do not capitalize regular nouns except when they come at the beginning of the title.
- Names of topic categories should be singular, normally corresponding to the name of an article. Examples: "Fire Nation", "Aang".
- Names of set categories should be plural. Example: "Earthbenders".
- Categories related to The Legend of Korra, either the series or the graphic novels, are distinguished from those for Avatar: The Last Airbender by the addition of the suffix "(Legend of Korra)".
Categorizing pages[]
Each categorized page should be placed in all categories to which it logically belongs. This means that if a page belongs to a subcategory of C (or a subcategory of a subcategory of C, and so on), then it should also be placed into C if and only if C would also logically and directly apply to the page. For example:
- Aang is placed in Category:Characters.
- Toph would not be placed in Category:Bending arts.
Classifying characters[]
Every character, regardless of the series or graphic novel, is placed in Category:Characters. Additionally, every character appearing in The Legend of Korra is placed in Category:Legend of Korra characters, and a character appearing in an installment of a graphic novel is placed in Category:Graphic novel characters as well as Category:[Name of the graphic novel] characters.
Avatar Wiki classifies characters that appear in Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, and the graphic novels related to either series as main, major, or minor characters. The criteria for inclusion in each classification is set out below. For the graphic novels, these categories are named "Main/Major/Minor graphic novel characters".
For this classification scheme:
- "Featured" refers to being a catalyst or overtly and directly supporting the catalyst for a pattern of events.
- "Pattern of events" refers to one of the individual story threads (running through an episode).
Minor character[]
For Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, the graphic novels, and the Chronicles of the Avatar novels, a minor character is:
- Anyone who has one or more lines of dialogue;
- Otherwise, anyone who performs an action that is the clear and unambiguous focal point of that frame (merely appearing does not fulfill this requirement).
For Avatar Legends: The Roleyplaying Game, a minor character is:
- Anyone whose actions are not the focal point of the story or significantly affect it.
Major character[]
For Avatar: The Last Airbender, a major character fulfills the requirements for a minor character and is:
- Anyone who is featured in the pattern of events for two or more episodes;
- Otherwise, anyone who has dialogue in a majority of episodes in a Book.
For The Legend of Korra, a major character fulfills the requirements for a minor character and is:
- Anyone who is featured in the pattern of events for a majority of episodes in a Book.
For the graphic novels, a major character fulfills the requirements for a minor character and is:
- Anyone who is featured in the pattern of events for every installment of a graphic novel trilogy and who reappears in a supporting role for the patterns of events in at least one other installment of another graphic novel trilogy.
For the Chronicles of the Avatar novels, a major character fulfills the requirements for a minor character and is:
- Anyone who is featured in the pattern of events for a majority of chapters in one or more novels;
- Otherwise, anyone who has dialogue in a majority of chapters in a novel.
For Avatar Legends: The Roleyplaying Game, a major character is:
- Anyone whose actions are the unambiguous focal point of the story or significantly affect it.
- Every pregenerated character.
Main character[]
For Avatar: The Last Airbender, a main character fulfills the requirements for a major character and is:
- Anyone who is featured in the pattern of events for a majority of episodes in the series (as distinct from an individual Book);
- Otherwise, anyone who acts as the primary antagonist for a series (as distinct from an individual Book).
For The Legend of Korra, a main character fulfills the requirements for a major character and is:
- Anyone who is featured in the pattern of events for a majority of episodes in the series (as distinct from an individual Book).
For the graphic novels, a main character fulfills the requirements for a major character and is:
- Anyone who is featured in the pattern of events for a majority of the installments of all the graphic novel trilogies.
For the Chronicles of the Avatar novels, a main character fulfills the requirements for a major character and is:
- Anyone who is featured in the pattern of events for a majority of chapters in a novel series (as distinct from an individual novel);
- Otherwise, anyone who acts as the primary antagonist for a novel series (as distinct from an individual novel).
