I just finished the season 1 of the netflix adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender and I think it is severely overhated.
Before I started watching I assumed it was going to be really bad and I horrible remake but I actually really enjoyed it even though I’m a huge fan of the original and the sequel The Legend of Korra. I don’t really understand what you guys expected it to be like. It can’t just be the same thing as the original because then it wouldn’t be interesting and very predictable. Yes, a lot of the characters are different with their personalities but it makes sense. The remake has a higher age rating than the original as it was made for an older audience. This show is a more mature version with less jokes and a more serious version. In my opinion its a more realistic version of the show as Sokka had to take on so much responsibility to look after his village after his father left as other characters are slightly different as well.
I prefer the remake’s take on Aang and Katara’s relationship as it makes a bit more sense. In the original, Katara has always been shown to be a motherly role to Aang, often taking care and protecting him. She also is often shown to have authority over Aang as she tells him not to do certain things and he listens. This is most evident during ‘The Runaway’ when Toph criticizes her for doing so. Katara even calls him a sweet guy just like Momo in season 1 yet, it pushes Aang and Katara’s relationship into something romantic even with the 2 year age gap making it even weirder. Believe me, I’m all for the whole ‘Kataang’ ship but I feel like it makes more sense for them to get together way later when their relationship shifts more to romantic instead of Katara seemingly gaining feelings for Aang at the end of 1x14 ‘The Fortune-Teller’.
Please let me know reasons why you either enjoyed the show or hated it.
