I just realized something--you know how Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is coming out at the some month as part 2? The parallels between the Hundred Year War and the reign of the Galactic Empire are even greater here's why--Just like how Ozai's defeat did not mean his empire fell with him, the death of the Emperor also did not mean the Empire would fall with him. Heck the New Ozai Society are like the First Order in that they're both remnants of their defeated Empires.

So in other words, YES their leaders have been defeated. NO, a large group of their respective Empires are still standing. YES the fight between the heroes and the Empires still goes on (though in Avatar's case, the heroes fighting the imperial remnant are Mai and Ty Lee).

But unlike the New Ozai Society, the First Order cannot restore the previous ruler to the throne. Palpatine and Darth Vader are dead. And the First Order is led by Supreme Leader Snoke and the Knights of Ren (a group of users of the Dark Side of the Force, which Kylo Ren is part of). Along with the Knights, Snoke himself also knows the ways of the Force.
