<p>You're reaching... An earthbender can bend the earth. You've seen all the things they can do and yet reject the idea of opening an inescapable hole under their opponents. That was never seen on the show for plot convenience. Otherwise the every fight with an earthbender would be over in 3 seconds. Not to mention the Hundred Year War.
