It's corroborated.  So if we're going to claim it's canon that Iroh the Younger is 40 (despite the fact that he doesn't look a day over 30 and that was a joke) or that Korra is 5'7" (despite that not making sense in relation to Mako supposedly being 6'2"), I'd say the same applies to this.
