A little crime? Really?

Suyin was an accomplice of two people who were definite criminals. Lin saw this coming before and warned her of joining up with those people. Rather than listen to Lin, she just showed how Toph wouldn't do anything even if she decided to skip school or anything. She then proceded to ignore Lin's orders and even scarred Lin for life. Hence, Lin's been holding up those feelings for life. Add to that, the crime at the end, which ultimately showed how Su could get away with anything because her mother was the chief. And that ruined the family. Toph was never the same again. She was guilty, She just contradicted everything she had done in her career, and the guilt forced her to retire. Lin blamed all of this on Suyin.

If that person was anyone other than Suyin, maybe a common non-bender, would they ever have escaped for accompanying criminals and scarring an officer for life by assaulting them?

and on top of all that, the fact that the scar is on her face, like Zuko, means she is forced to remember that time and all that pain every time she looks in the mirror. And for thirty years of building that up? I think Lin held up more than the avarage person ever could have. Props to her, that lady is my hero.
