My apologies if this question has already been discussed elsewhere; I didn't find another thread regarding it (though I really didn't look that hard either).

I was curious what everyone's thoughts are about the Avatar's reincarnation: How is the new incarnation chosen?

I mean, when the current Avatar dies and their spirit "moves on" to it's next life, how is it, that the new body (shell?) is selected? It can't just be coincidence that the new life of the Avatar just happens to always be born within the correct nation, to an appropriate family where the parents happen to possess the ' x' bending gene that is the next within the Avatar Cycle.

Does Raava somehow sense these things? Such as sensing the ability of bending within people, and more specifically the element which they are able to bend. Perhaps even the ability to sense the coming of a new life (baby).

There must be some force guiding the spirit/soul of the Avatar every time the current one dies, to ensure the cycle is continued as originated/intended, right?

Is Raava solely responsible for actively seeking out and selecting the next mortal body for the Avatar's next/new life?

I was just lightly pondering these thoughts while reading comments on another thread, when I suddenly started to really try and wrap my mind around how the process of the Avatar's reincarnation actually works; thought it would make for some fun speculation!
