United Republic of Nations

Even though they based some things off of the USA for The URN I like the fact that...

• There was no segregation between nationalities or benders or genders

• There is more diversity between cultures compared to other areas in Avatar

• New sports were created

• There was what looked like a democratic system of government

• And the 1920s style of life

The wiki's page states that after the Hundred-Year War, the Ruins of Taku became part of the United Republic of Nations. However, I also looked at the wiki's interactive map, and I zoomed in to Taku's location. The map shows that Taku is still outside the United Republic's borders.

A republic at its core, is where an individual represents a certain group of people. In American (and most republics), the people vote for who will represent them. Thus, I am confused by the United Republic government.

In the first season, we see a council of 5. Each represents a certain demographic. And this confuses me to no end. In Republic City and the United Republic as a whole, people mix together. This is not colonial India. The lines aren't well drawn. So why the need for a council representing 5 groups that are intermingling and have created lives in different areas together? It also doesn't make sense to me election wise, because if they are elected in, then how do they identify who is allowed to vote for what? And if they are elected, that begs the question of why the people care that there are no non-benders in the council, when they could've just elected them in if they wanted? And if they are handpicked, then who is handpicking them?

Actually if you think about it, these questions are made more complicated if we zoom out. The United Republic isn't just Republic City. But, the council is supposed to be in charge of it all. Even though all of them are from Republic City, and are all representing the weird demographics I just talked about.

And it gets worse when you think about Raiko. We don't see any form of legislative branch. Just Raiko. That's not a republic. That's a dictatorship. Thus it is no longer a republic at all.

Anyway, if Bryke did want to make sense of it all, then a better government for Republic City would look like this (aka I'm just retooling the American government for the Avatar world):

1. A legislative branch should be created. It should be based on election in different regions of the United Republic, regardless of bending or nationality. Either have it basically be US senate rules (everyone gets the same # of senators per state) or House Rules (representation is based on population). Or you could just do the 2 houses thing. Bottom line, a legislative branch voted for by the people.

2. An executive branch voted for by the people. We already see this, so no change here.

3. Better division between federal and city government. The amount of times Raiko is obsessed with city matters and not nation matters annoys me. Especially because Republic City has a mayor.

Though Republic City is the most frequently shown location in the United Republic of Nations, it is not the only city there. For example, Yu Dao is also part of URON. But, how does this all work? Is Yu Dao like New York City to Republic City's Washington DC? It follows the laws of the general URON, but basically functions on its own based off of the laws of their state and city? And I'm more confused, because in the ATLA sequel comics we see that Yu Dao is run by a council. This obviously inspires Republic City's first government. But, once they change it into a presidency, I was wondering if that would then have to change Yu Dao's government. I was wondering what everyone else thinks.

For the longest time there were 4 nations

1. The Fire Nation

2. The Water Tribes

3. The Earth Kingdom

4. The Air Nomads

Then every now & again we had gotten a shang city:

1. Fifth Nation

2. Flying Opera Company, to name a few

Then they went out and it was back to the four. But when the Hundred Year War began the Air Genocide happened and there was only 3:

1. The Fire Nation

2. The Water Tribes

3. The Earth Kingdom

And after the war ended their was later 5 nations:

1. The Fire Nation

2. The Earth Kingdom

3. The Water Tribes

4. The United Republic of Nations

5. The Air Nation(If you count the Air Acolytes as the citizens)

Then some time after that there was 6:

1. The Fire Nation

2. The Waters Tribes

3. The Earth Kingdom

4. The United Republic of Nations

5. The Air Nation

6. Zaofo

And following after the Water Tribe Civil War & Harmonic Convergence there was technically 8 nations:

1. The Fire Nation

2. The Earth Kingdom

3. The Northern Water Tribe

4. The Southern Water Tribe

5. The Foggy Swamp Tribe

6. The Air Nation

7. The United Republic of Nations

8. Zaofo

And following the Death of the Earth Queen & Rise of the Earth Empire there was technically 6:

1. The Fire Nation

2. The Northern Water Tribe

3. The Southern Water Tribe

4. The Air Nation

5. The Earth Empire(They took Zaofo, made up the previous Earth Kingdom & technically took control of the Foggy Swamp Tribe just for the vines)

6. The United Republic of Nations(Since there was no signing yet of their surrender; if I'm not mistaken)

And at the end there was once again 8 nations(I'm still not entirely sure if the Earth Kingdom is still together like a Conglomeration or Confederation of Independent states):

1. The Fire Nation

2. The Earth Kingdom

3. The Northern Water Tribe

4. The Southern Water Tribe

5. The Foggy Swamp Tribe

6. The Air Nation

7. The United Republic of Nations

8. Zaofo

Somewhere in the Territory United Republic of Nations?

It is, after all, part of the Earth Kingdom and on its land.

Sorry to be a conspiracy theorist but seriously, we see literally no elections or anyone trying to run for president or councilmen or councilwoman. Maybe the creators just skipped over this or I missed it, but it seems for I think like the 7 or 8 years Korra takes place, Raiko is always the president the councilmembers only change because people die or are in jail and the rest are forced over their jobs after Raiko takes over. I mean the fandom page of Raiko is this, "who served as the first democratically-chosen president of the United Republic of Nations. An assertive authority figure, he was elected to the position following the dissolution of the United Republic Council in 171 AG.[4]" but what evidence do we have that he was actually elected from the shows or comics. All i see is Zhu Li beating him which the fandom page also says . And once again we are just going off this what this fandom says. Once again, trying not to be a conspiracy theorist but from my knowledge, I see no elections at all besides the ones that the fandom page says. Just saying. And further more, we see a strong police force that somehow only really focuses on things that would undermine the ruler's authority. North vs South civil war, ignored, Red lotus, almost completely ignored until he threatened total anarchy. Kuvira, focused on because she threatened to take over republic city and become the new ruler. Just saying

I probably looked over something in the show or comics, but it is actually kinda fun being a conspiracy theorist. bye :)

Considering economics, trade, foreign policy, citizen welfare, quality of life, inequality, corrupt government, and more. And in the US, what party would you feel the nation would take?

By Kuvira Crisis, I mean when she proclaimed the Earth Empire to right before she attacks the UF ships. I might add on as I watch the final two episodes.

The Earth Empire.

Proclaiming TEE: She technically did nothing wrong, as she made an oath to step down from uniting the Earth Kingdom, not, not forming a new Empire.

Slavery and Imprisonment of non-Earthbenders: Slavery I am not sure if it is mentioned for a fact by the Prisoners, but I know it is a rumor. Since it is a rumor i can't really say anything on it. Imprisoning those people though is not good, but they may have lied and commited crimes, but I will assume it is to root out potential traitors, which is also not good. About the Re-education camps, since all that is mentioned is that traitors get sent there, I just think it isn't some torture camp.

Attacking Zaofu and the UR: It is EE territory so it isn't as bad as say, attacking the Water Tribes. UR is worse since it is it's own nation, but it is still EE territory.

Kidnapping Wu: Bad, but isn't as bad as Kidnapping another world leader, since Wu is incompetent at leading.

The Super-weapon: I don't see anything wrong with it. A good way to keep peace is with the threats of facing a super-weapon. Saying TEE having the cannon being wrong, is kinda like saying any Nuclear Power holding onto their Nukes is wrong. While holding onto them is fine, Kuvira using hers is nowhere near as bad as using Nukes, as the cannon's firepower is nothing compared to nukes. Part of this is the taking of vines, which I don't see anything wrong with. They are natural resources.

Lasering those Scouts: They were enemy combatants, kinda. May be wrong, but if I am, then it is wrong.

Everyone Else.

Su's attack on Kuvira: This is consider bad. Su and her attack squad violated the peace treaty between Zaofu and TEE. She attempted to attack Kuvira in her sleep when negotiation where being made.

The 1v1: On a minor scale, Kuvira and Korra's 1v1 was stopped by Opal and Jinora, who where diplomats. Bad, but on a smaller scale. This also may be a Warcrime under the posing as non-hostiles part.

Operation: Beifong: Another bad one. This time the attacked and rescued people who where legally detained.

Another attack on Kuvira: Once again they do another strike. Nothing happens, though they attack again before any war was declared.

Not surrendering: Korra and a small group went against the peace that was the surrender. May be a warcrime under Perfidy.

Attacking Bataar: They attacked and took hostage Bataar, when they where negotiating surrender. Another warcrime.

Might have missed some stuff, but I must say TEE is the lesser evil in the Kuviria Crisis. Simply because the amount of Warcrimes and attacks committed before any war started. It is close though, and this is my opinion.

As of the time of Legend of Korra there are 6 nations. but was the air nation land ever officially given to Tenzin. Because when the United Republic formed, it was made up of the Fire Nation Colonies(eg Yu Dau and Cranfish Town) and all of the Air Nomad lands. This includes the Sun Warriors' lands since they were in air nomad land. I'm guessing the URN council and president held onto this land since there were barely any airbenders. but now that the airbenders are back, do you think President Moon would give those islands back to Tenzin so he can become Airbender President? Knowing Julie she probably would.

I'm beginning to wonder that and also is Republic City like Washington D. C.?
