I apologize for getting my next ship out so late in the day. I was at work and haven't been feeling well.
Halina is the ship between Hakoda and Malina.
I remember when North and South was first announced and it was revealed that a woman named Malina would be introduced. Malina is also the name of Unalaq's wife so naturally, people assumed that they were one and the same, until it was pointed out that this Malina would be too old to be Desna and Eska's mother. This Malina ended up being Hakoda's new girlfriend instead.
Hakoda and Malina met at some point during the Southern Reconstruction Project and eventually fell for each other. This may be at least part of the reason why Malina decided that the Northern Water Tribe should not try to take over the south and trusted them to manage their own oil source. They continued to support each other during the unrest and had a very close call. While Aang was struggling to save them and Gilak tried to kill Hakoda, Malina let go while proclaiming her love for Hakoda who cried in despair. Fortunately, Katara managed to save her.
I remember being wary at first and not wanting to support the pairing. I wasn't sure what Malina's real motives were or if she could be trusted. I have no issue with widows and widowers finding love in someone else but also shipped Bakoda and this kind of sunk it, not that Bakoda had much of a foundation to begin with anyway. But as I read the rest of North and South I realized that Malina's feelings were genuine and that she is a good person. I guess in a way my own acceptance of Malina kind of mirrored Katara's.
I welcome all opinions on Halina as well as other ships involving Hakoda and Malina but please do keep comments constructive.
