Disclaimer: I do not present this as a proper theory with evidence, there is really quite none, I'm just having fun and trying to come up with an interesting story.

Since combustionbending is my absolute most favorite bending type (followed closely by lava), I was always curious about the man that originaly introduced it to the show and the origin of the art itself (even going so far as creating my own fan-story about its origin, I think it's quite cool, but that's a topic for another day).

Here I want to discuss a really fun I had idea about the man nicknamed Combustion Man or Sparky Sparky Boom Man. What if he was the descendant of Kuzon.

Hear me out. Yes this is entirely a theory, or even just a silly idea I had, but here's what I think. [Image deleted according to
Avatar Wiki:Images policy] According to the amazing diagram on the right, cumbustion is the bending ability devised from air and fire (although only firebenders are able to use it, just like only earthbenders can lavabend - lava coming from earth and fire). That means having parents of both of the elements could make someone more likely to learn the technique coming from both of those elements (theory suggests, that's what's happening with Bolin's lavabending in LoK, but that's also a topic for another day).

Back to Kuzon and Combustion Man. We already know that Kuzon is a friend with Aand, an airbender, and I'd say it is likely, that he's familiar with a few other airbenders as well. My theoretical story goes like this - Kuzon knows a girl from the air nation, presumably a friend to Aang as well. When the war starts, she manages to escape the genocide and finds herself in the Fire kingdom, looking for the place she knows best here and knows will be safe in. Kuzon of course invites her in and let's her stay. Eventually the two fall in love bulding on their former friendship and some more time later, they have children. And the combination of the two elements in the genes result in a combustion bender.

At the time of the genocide, Kuzon is very likely the same age as Aang (12), meaning there is a lot of time for him to have children. The Combustion Man at the time of the show looks to be in his thirties/forties, which - for him to be Kuzon's son - would mean Kuzon had him in his seventies and that is very unlikely. It's more so that Combustion Man would be his grandson, son of the original combustionbender in the family.

now to the conclusion, there is no evidence for this and it's not supposed to be a theory. I just think it is really cool to assume one of the biggest threats to Aang is a descendant of his good friend(s). It goes really wel thematically with the scene Aang mention Kuzon to Zuko and would be a great contrast to the line "Some friendships are so strong, they can even transcend lifetimes." by Roku about Gyatso (another close friend of Aang.

What do you think? Is it possible? Is it itriguing? Do you like combustionbending as much as I do? Is this post too damn long? Continue the discussion.

Sidenote: I'd also love to assume, Combustion Man has inherited his grandfather's name, therefore also being named Kuzon (while Zuko is the only one on screen who knows the name and it is never revealed). Just imagine. One of the most terrifying enemies of Aang being named Kuzon and being the descendant of Kuzon.
