History of the World of Avatar

We all know that the best part of Book 2 of The Legend of Korra was the story of the Avatar's very origin. Wan was a well-meaning thief who eventually became a living god by fusing with Raava during their battle with Vaatu. While Wan never achieved peace in his lifetime, he did eventually die and thus begin the cycle of reincarnation that has lasted for millennia.

Now, that being said, what do you, the fans, think it was like for the first three Avatars following Wan? Clearly Wan was not aware of the reincarnation cycle prior to his death because he was the first Avatar, hence why he bemoaned his failure to bring peace to the world. What do you think reincarnating was like for him? And then the Air, Water, and Earth Avatars that followed?

Wan's establishment of the position of the Avatar was unprecedented in every sense of the word. So for the first few cycles, as the position of the Avatar became established, it must have been a crazy time to not only be alive, but to specifically be the Avatar.

Do you think the second Avatar freaked out when they realized they could use more than one element? Did they have visions of Wan while looking into pool of water, which we know is something that later Avatars experienced. Did they hear Raava's voice and how do you think she explained the process to the first and second Avatars?

I've never really heard of any fan discussions on the matter and I'm curious as to what this community has to say about it.

That one official timeline Avatar Studios posted says that Yangchen lived for 155 (born in 500 BG, died in 345). I was just wondering why this info is still nowhere to be found in Yangchen article and all the others related Yangchen era? This finally settles the timeline issue. Ik that this is basically copypasted from the Legacy of Rohan (which I'm not a fan of), but is there a big reason not to consider that canon or why the years still aren't incorporated?

Per the timeline in official Avatar Studios website, Dawn of Yangchen takes place 9347 years after Wan's Harmonic Convergence, which translates to 483 or 482 BG. The years in this timeline aren't perfectly aligned with BG/AG years as it has ATLA B1/B2 and TLOK B1/B2 taking place in the same year, so it can be either. However, since Yangchen is stated to be 17, it's more likely to be 483 as it would make sense for her birth date to be rounded to 500 BG by the creators.

• Chin - It is not known how long War of Chin the Conqueror lasted, but it began under the 46th Earth King, who reigned in 270 BG, which was when the war ended with the attempted invasion of the Yokoya peninsula. We know that the Earth King Yi Ming reigned around 295-293 BG, so War of Chin the Conqueror must have begun after 293 BG. Therefore, Chin the Great's conquest of the Earth Kingdom could have lasted about 22 years at most. Chin the Conqueror had the entire Earth Kingdom under his control, except for Ba Sing Se and Yokoya.

• Fire Nation - The Fire Nation attempted to conquer the Earth Kingdom during the Hundred Year War. The war, as the name suggests, lasted 100 years, and during that time the Fire Nation did not conquer the entire nation, it controlled areas in the northwest, north, north-central, and northeastern Earth Kingdom.

• Kuvira - As the Interim President of the Earth Kingdom, Kuvira set out to unite the earth nation, which had fallen into anarchy following the death of Earth Queen Hou-Ting. She succeeded in this in about three years, and then attempted to reclaim the lands of the western coast of the continent that had been lost after the War, which were now within the borders of the United Republic of Nations.

So:

• Emperor Chin unified the Earth Kingdom in 22 years at most, excluding Ba Sing Se and Yokoya.

• The Fire Nation had only captured the most important areas of the Earth Kingdom during the 100-year war, although they were a much more advanced nation, and there were still many unoccupied territories left to conquer.

• Kuvira united the Earth Kingdom to form the Earth Empire in just three years, even though she did not conquer former Earth Kingdom territories within the United Republic of Nations.

A while ago I found out what the phrase "luck of the Irish" was originally used as a sarcastic comment given that Irish people had a history of bad luck and when you use it originally in ATLA this would & could work for the Air Nomads. I say this because the Air Benders had bad luck for years when we watch the show:

• Genocide is definitely bad luck

• Aang had terrible luck during the show(mostly due to being the Avatar but still)

• Tenzin's family were attacked & kidnapped by Equalists then almost had their bending blocked by Amon

• The new Airbenders from Ba Sing Se were kidnapped by Dai Li agents and were gonna be forced to protect the terrible Earth Queen

• The New Airbenders were almost wiped out by the Red Lotus just for leverage over Korra

• And any more y'all can think of

But we can all say the other nations have had a history of bad luck too but I feel the Air Nomads may have had the worst. Correct me if I'm wrong I'm just staying my opinion.

While looking through the wiki, I came upon something from Avatar Generations that spurred on a history theory for the water tribes.

Here is what know so far about the pre-Era of Yangchen history of the water tribe. In Beginnings we see that a water lion turtle lives in the tropics. This could be one of many water lion turtles, or it may just be the only one, they never exactly say. Anyway, we know that after the Lion Turtles kick everyone off people start fighting, as well as the Bhanti Island Community formed. Eventually the community split, and the order became the basis for the fire sages, the water sages, and the earth sages. Later on they all came together at the Northern Water Tribe. Then after a long time, a group left for the southern pole due to civil unrest. Years later, a group from the south would leave, and start a tribe in the Swamp.

But, I think there is more to this history. Because I think that before the southern secession and then the swamp migration, their were other water tribes.

In Avatar Generations we learn of the Glacial Temple in the south pole.

Wen, an archeologist claims that it is older then the Southern Water Tribe. But, how is this possible if nobody lived in the South pole before the secessionists? Well, I think that before the official southern water tribe, people did live there. I believe that during the era of Raava, people made their way to the south pole. I think they lived like the Fire Nation Sun Warriors, aka isolationist, small, and very spiritual. Later, when the northerners came, they forcefully united together to create a much larger water tribe. Much like conquistadors, I believe that the northerns might have taken over the society, and became in charge. Due to wanting to split from northern values, I think they started to implement less spiritual policies. This led to the Glacial Temple being abandoned, and the Southern Water Tribe being less spiritual in general. I think this forced mixing and lack of spirituality might have led to some of these new southerners to get annoyed and leave, finding themselves in the swamp. Also considering the lighter skin of the swamp tribe, it is possible that there was another tribe here too, or at least another group of people who assimilated. But, due to the roughish environment of the swamp, they may have only been able to sustain a smaller tribe. Thus, over time, the 3 main tribes formed.

Anyway, what do you think about my theory?

hi!! I'm trying to find a timeline from Avatar: last Airbender and I can't find one... like a show timeline of the events, any tips??

If a possible third series does happen, do you think we might see the world of Avatar advance further into modern times in similar parallels to the 1960's, 70's, 80's, 90's or even into the 21st century of today?

Okay so this is all just a guess

Kanna was born in 19 ag. so in the show, she is 80 and Hama says in her ep that the fire nation attacks "were 60 years ago" so Kanna was 20 in that ep . and I was trying to figure out when hakoda was born and I threw an age in the air then numbered it down a bit

So I think Kanna was 37 when hakoda was born and that makes his birth year 56 ag.

So when Sokka and katara were born he was 28 and 29. when kya died in 94 ag he was 38 . and then I thought that kya was probably a few years younger than him so kya is 2 years younger than him .that makes her birth year 58 ag and that means she was 26 when Sokka was born and 27 when katara was born and then that makes her 36 when she died.

Katara was probably close to her ninth birthday so the years are correct

Hakoda left when Sokka was 13 and Katara was 12, two years before Aang got out of the ice so the year he left is 98 ag or 97 ag (not sure) so hakoda was 42 when he left. so that makes him 44 when we see him again.

What if I, or someone else, made a book used for all the lore in the Avatar universe, most heavily focusing on the time in between ATLA and LOK? Like, the era of Raava, before Raava, creation, era of the Avatar, LOK, and ATLA and everything in between, and maybe even find some sort of destruction prophecy of sorts

Yeah, you heard it right, you get to make your own Avatar Map!!! Using either WorldBlox (you can download it in Google Play) or a poll to choose which features the world should have or a drawing of your world. Please do not try to copy the original Four Nations or any other user's art. I will create a poll in which you have to choose which method of creation you would prefer. The option with the highest votes will be the method you have to use. You can also colour it to show which nation has which bending. You can also add different bending elements! You can, however use inspiration from the original Four Nations and use it in your own map. You can add the world's history, different places and even capital cities. You also can add the word "demolished" or "extinct" to show that that place's history was involved in war or attack and that nation unfortunately, lost the battle or succumbed. Anyway, I will be waiting for your response and let the tournament, BEGIN!!!

I can't stop wondering about the unrealistic timeline in Avatar. In ATLA the world is sort of idk medieval, They are still using swords and bows and don't have trains in two of three of the nations(not counting air nation). Yes the Fire Nation has trains but that's it. Technology hasn't advanced a lot. People like Sokka and the Mechanist did invent new stuff like submarines and airships, but that is it. Besides that people still rode carriages and used wagons and carts. 70 years later in LoK the world has cars and trucks and large battleships and radios. I think it would take longer for the world to go from an anachronistic 1800s setting to an anachronistic 1900s setting. What do you think?

Not sure many people know about this but 16 Era names exist in the timeline of the Avatar Universe. It’s confirmed that the Invasion of the Fire Nation on the Day of the Black Sun occurred during the Ri Wu Era. The name itself translates roughly to “Superior military” which most likely began around 0ag.

The era name that intrigues me is the Zhi Yuan which is the 3rd of the 16 era’s. It roughly translates to “Foundation and origin” which got me thinking.

Kyoshi was the origins and foundations of multiple things in present day Avatar, such as the Kyoshi Warriors, Kyoshi Island and the Dai Li. These were most likely formed around 270BG after Chins death, as his reign and conquest of the continent would also leave the mainland in shambles.

If that is the case, then Kyoshi was responsible for forming the Zhi Yuan Era or was born into the late Jiong Yu (Which roughly means “Bright abundance”) Era in her novels. Tell me your thoughts in the comments.

PS: If this is the case, then 3 Era’s (minus the 4th I mentioned and the 74 years after the Hundred Year War) existed within a span of 412-370 years.
