This is an essay about the differences between the two series and why I think that atla was a much more significant series. I’m going to compare the two and talk about what I think LoK did wrong.
This is a rough and touchy subject but might aswell rip the bandaid off. SHIPS!!!! We love or we hate them. Personally I absolutely HATED the way LoK handled the ships especially ones involving Korra. I wanna start with Makorra. I think the relationship between them was handled terribly creating such a riff between them in season 1 and 2. I don’t think that if they ended up together it wouldn’t last. And now korrasami. I think that it was EXTREMELY shoe-horned in, in an attempt to bring LGBTQ+ representation. I love the representation however it was extremely last second making it seem out of pocket and random. I never felt my self rooting for them. it should have been handled WAY differently maybe being planed ahead more and starting buildup around season 2 instead of making an uncomfortable relationship between them bc of mako. Me personally I think the avatar should have ended up with nobody.
Now let’s talk about the antagonists. I’m leaving out the red lotus and Amon for another part. I’m here to talk about unalaq and kuviera. Kuviera was a SUPER cool character. powerful dictator wanting control of the entire earth nation and doing whatever to do so. But the spirit vine mech was quite possibly the goofiest last “boss battle” in the history of the avatar series. The mecha-suit was so unrealistic and so boring to watch. I think they should kept the vine weapon but make it less intensely overpowered. Give her some other edge, I wanted to see more of her fighting, like the fight with ozai and Aang or the fight with unalaq, bolin, and mako. Now Unalaq. Coming from the worst season in all of the avatar series imo. Book 2 spirits. I think the story between ravaa and vaatu was cool I enjoyed it. I absolutely hate the fact that unavaatu basically killed off all the past avatars. I wanted to see more history in the show, more aang, Roku, and, kyoshi. If they would’ve been able to resurrect those pst live some how I would’ve enjoyed that season much more
Now the comedic attempt to recreate Sokka. There are a few comedic relief characters like, Bolin, Varrick, and Meelo. I personally don’t like bolin at all. I think that there is very little seriousness in him at all and it makes for a hard to watch character, plus he’s just not as funny. Meelo is another character I just don’t like. Atleast bolin redeem himself a bit around season 3 I never found meelo funny or enjoyable. The writers clearly tried to tap into the younger audience with the “fart-bending.” It made me visibly cringe. Varrick however was a very good character and ended up being one of my most favorite and one I find almost as funny as Sokka.
Now let’s talk about some of the things I liked about the series. Starting with pro-bending. It was so cool watching modern sports collide with the avatarverse. It had everything from stardom, crazy deranged fans and even cheating. And now for the red lotus and Amon. Amon was such a cool character. I love how his story touch into the past and gave us some past team-avatar screen time. And now for the red lotus. There is no fathoming how much I love all four of these villains. Zaheer was so wise and fun to watch. He was such a neutral character and it was so cool. And I love how in season four Zaheer ended up helping Korra. I also love how each of the red lotus members were all unique in some way. P’Li was a combustion bender. I thought it was so cool how they brought back the rare art of combustion bending without making her so overwhelming and powerful like the kuviera mechsuit. I also love the way Korra got poisoned. I know it sounds harsh but it’s true. It was so cool seeing her overcome this traumatic event. I also love the appearance of the old team avatar and IROH!!!!!!! I LOVE THAT HES NOT DEAD!!!!!!!!
I wish I could have seen some kyoshi island/warriors representation. And some more fire nation would be cool too. But all and all I live both series to death but I wish The legend of Korra could have given me the same impact Avatar: The Last Airbender could have. Of course this is all my opinion and may contradict what you may think. Please feel free to ask questions and share your own opinions. Thank you so much for reading <3 !!!!!!
