Hey everyone, for those who don't know, Azula in the Spirit Temple is an Avatar Universe comic that was released this Halloween. It is a long-anticipated sequel to Smoke and Shadow. The story itself stars Azula but features several prominent figures from the Avatar world.
This adventure is a spiritual journey, and it is also a major chapter in Azula's self-development. With that being said, I want to say that this story is well developed. The art is good, as usual. The dialogue is interesting, and the setting adds a sense of wonder and mystery to the reader.
All in all, I really enjoyed this. I still preferred Smoke and Shadow a bit more because the stakes were higher. On the other hand, since the stakes were lower than that story (not to say there were or weren't any), there was less room to make controversial mistakes than in that story.
In the end, I'm going to give it 4 stars. Not quite 5-star level because it didn't do anything to blow my mind however, it didn't make any major mistakes either. That covers my basic review but it you have already read the story, feel free to look at some of my additional points.
Other Points (With Spoilers)
Azula's attack on a small agricultural facility didn't do much to create the grand sense of Azula's operation or threat level. Azula also was quick to run away from a fight that seemed to be winnable for someone of her power. Part of the reason for this is because she doesn't want to actually hurt her old friend Ty Lee, even if she views her as a traitor.
The story itself was fairly interesting and the spirit played her part in making it stand out. The use of flashbacks and reflections was relevant for a tale like this. As previously mentioned, this story hits the checkmarks. I'm also somewhat glad it didn't do too much because this was written to line up another story in Azula's development and the next one can be even more spectacular in significance.
And again, whenever a story makes big moves in its lore concepts or scale, it risks damaging the lore more than it if kept things simpler. I will gladly add this to my comic collection.
