Ghazan was also a metal bender, right?

When the Red Lotus captured Korra and we’re trying to kill her in the Avatar State, Ghazan metal bends mercury into Korra’s body. That sounds pretty self explanatory, but why then could Bolin not metalbend? It was building all season how Bolin couldn’t metal bend and how he just couldn’t do it and then for him to be able to lava bend. It makes the viewer think that Bolin couldn’t metalbend because he’s a lava bender. Lava is messy while metal is refined. This at least builds in my mind that one can’t be both. Except Ghazan was both? Obviously he wasn’t bending solid metal but this still doesn’t make sense. Could Bolin have been a metal bender or not?

It wasn't Ghazan. It was 2 unnamed Red Lotus members. Ghazan likely can't Metalbend.

Yeah, it wasn't Ghazan. But he can't surely metalbend because why would they need other members to come to bend the poison if Ghazan was right there.

He did not bend the Mercury. But, it may be possible for him and Bolin to metalbend. Toph (the creator of metalbending) said that if you find the right teacher, you will be able to learn metalbending. They just need to find the right teacher. There is also no evidence that you are only able to subend one thing. Toph, Su, Lin, etc. use seismic sense (which is an official subending technique) can all Metalbend. Anyway, Ghazan and Bolin could probably metalbend if they found the right teacher.
