Yeah, I'll say it. And let's be honest, you can comment that on all fanon ever, but Genji in particular. We learned a whole lot more about Genji yesterday, and I've gotta say, it looks more like the Kyoshi novels every time. (Take a peek at TheAvatarist's new video to see what I mean). First of all, let's just talk about the logo. It's just the Rise/Shadow of Kyoshi logo with Genji instead of Kyoshi. The font and shape are so similar, too. So yeah. But that's not too big a deal. I can get by on one knockoff logo, because it was a good logo to begin with. But then they took the whole false avatar plotline, and inserted a good-looking, well-spoken man into that situation. Remind you of anyone? Yun, maybe? Spells out an eight-letter word that starts with k and ends with nockoff, if you ask me. Anyway, those are just my thoughts. I'm still excited, but... it's not as original as I'd like. What do you guys think?
The way you defend this fanon story so hard makes me think you might be one of Genji's creator or zealous follower.
I appreciate the effort gone into it, but I dislike the fact that some people have been misled into thinking it's canon.
I also am confused by their grasp on Asian culture, since Genji is a Japanese surname / clan name, but it is the first name of a sandbender, even though they had Central Asian names. This isn't much more accurate than JK Rowling's "Cho Chang."
Another thing that I dislike is that they unceremoniously kill off Korra young in an explosion, even though she survived multiple explosions with her bending in the show. And for no reasons, the stable nations descend into war, instead of expanding on one thread like human-spirit relations. The fashion style also seems more traditional than even existed in Korra. So I agree with you both @90 degree aangle @Tibhod
The legend of Genji sounds lame and stupid. i don't like it because they killed Korra off too early. make her die in her 30s. just like Kuruk.
I know they didn't plan it, but yeah. Korra is too much like Kuruk, and Genji is too much like Kyoshi.
Not that I have a strong opinion one way or the other, but is it really accurate to say they "took the whole false Avatar plotline" when, unless I'm mistaken, they came up with that idea before RoK was even announced?
Honestly I really don't like nor care about Genji since it didn't contribute anything to the original world and yet they got treat like canon and being featured in an article or videos and makes a lots of people mistake it and treat it as canon. (I don't like it when some fan project treat or change canon sources badly like using cultures that didn't exist in avatar universe etc, it affects the plotline or thene that makes zero sense, but that's just me personally nitpicking.)
I don't like how LoG treat Korra so badly. Killing off Korra just to pave way for the fanon character like that. Korra survived a lot of grave and dangerous situations and to kill her off by some explosion is just ridiculous.
As for fake avatar things, if we cut off the released date of Kyoshi novel and Genji release date ordeal away,
considered that there's a ton of avatars out there, fake avatar situation would probably exist even before Kyoshi era so I think Genji didn't copy Kyoshi's fake avatar thing though.
I really don't care if people think it's Canon. If anything is popular, people will think it's Canon. But as long as it says it's a fan project or fanon in the description that will do. It is up to people to find out for themselves.
But it really doesn't matter all that much. Fanon really only means it's a different universe if it's made well. Kinda like Legends vs Canon in Star Wars. As long as people who care enough know that it's another universe, then it doesn't really matter.
As for casuals who have never read or don't know the story, I don't think it matters at all. If they're interested enough to know they'll find the answer.
Some fans think Genji will bring back the past Avatars.
