Something that would be cool in avatar is:

Once the avatars were re-born, they had to go all over the world to find the lion turtles and get their bending, instead of just being born with the ability to handle all four elements. This would make the show more adventurous and add a huge amount of enjoyment to watch! Imagine watching the avatar go on a bunch of trips around the world to get the bending from lion turtles. Then going to find masters. I think this would have been a great addition to the show!

I have a idea elaborating on yours... How about the subskills of bending but they all have their own animals related to them like metal bending could be an animal or something like that? :D

Or maybe lion turtles are only for main bendings, like maybe metal bending comes from snakes, bloodbending from rats...etc
