Only lion turtles can give people who previously couldn't bend a thing the ability to bend that thing.

Otherwise korra could give all the equalists bending to make them happy

<p>I'm not referring at all to the power to gift elements. The Lion Turtle teaches Aang how to bend energy as a way to take away bending. He doesn't get the power to gift elements, nor does Korra. Why can't Aang at least share that specific knowledge in the same way to Korra? </p>

<p>No, I don't say Aang gives her the power. Aang just gives her the knowledge, along with restoring Korra's bending. </p><p>Aang learns energybending in less than a day. It's unlikely that happens unless there is a supernatural gift of knowledge. Aang can't give people bending, but he can at least share his existing knowledge in the same way (via energybending). </p>

Energybending is not a prerequisite to the Avatar State nor the other way around. Aang was able to Energybend Ozai's Firebending away without any indication he already mastered the Avatar State.

A small point though: before Aang bends Ozai's energy, Aang has enough control to go out of the Avatar State out of his own will to stop the past Avatars from killing Ozai. In terms of Aang's ability to go in and out of the Avatar State, I think it's fair to say that he has figured out at least that. Shortly after he energybends, Aang shows control of the Avatar State to put out the fires. </p><p>However, I don't think it's a coincidence that both Aang and Korra first show their ability to energybend very near the time they show control of the Avatar State. When they open their seventh chakra, they see a vision of their higher selves. By going there, they are able to control themselves completely in the Avatar State. Specifically for Korra, she can energybend herself only when she connects to her inner spirit via the Tree of Time. I connect this to the Lion's Turtle's talk of needing a unbendable spirit to bend another's energy. The ability to have complete control of your own thoughts and actions can apply to both controlling yourself in the Avatar State and bending your own energy. Although the Avatar State is not required for energybending, I think they both involve similar spiritual revelations. </p>

I recall Aang breathed heavily before he tried to invoke the Avatar State at will before he put the fires out at Wulong Forest. I felt that he just realized he can now freely access the Avatar State by that time.

<p>I think Aang first has an inkling that he could control the Avatar State again when the four-element attack on Ozai stops at the last second. The Avatar State is all for killing Ozai, but Aang's goal to end the war another way prevails. Aang would need to take back control of himself to both go out of the Avatar State and to ultimately commit to sparing Ozai. </p>
