<p>I agree that when Aang or Korra willingly go into the Avatar State, they don't instantly know every one of their past lives' bending techniques. When Korra uses the Avatar State in the race, she's not using any new skills - it's still the air scooter, except with more bending power. I think Avatars in control primarily use the Avatar State to increase power to their own skills. </p><p>It's different with bending energy. Korra isn't even in the Avatar State when Aang first restores her bending. The knowledge of energybending is shared through Aang contacting Korra as a past life. After that, Korra isn't completely dependent on the Avatar State to know energybending. Rather, the mindset that goes with the Avatar State is required, including opening all chakras. Even Aang uses the Avatar State both times when taking Ozai and Yakone's bending, and he's not pulling skill from a past life - he remembers what the Lion Turtle teaches him. Even though it's Aang and Korra themselves doing the energybending, Raava could still support them. </p>

Aang went into the avatar state in his fight with yakone because it was the only way to counter yakone's bloodbending but aang wasn't in the avatar state when he used energybending to remove ozai's bending

It would be the same for Korra once she gains the knowledge from Aang. Without the Avatar State, the knowledge is still hers. </p>

<p>The white glow in Aang's tattoos is different than the red-orange energy of Ozai and the blue energy of Aang. When Aang's blue energy comes out, that represents his spirit trying to bend Ozai's energy, the red-orange light. It shows that both Aang's spirit and the Avatar State (Raava's energy) are working together, but it is Aang's energy that is used first in energybending. By extension, Korra's spirit is needed when she bends energy. </p><p>When Aang takes Yakone's bending, it can be assumed the energy battle plays out similarly to Aang vs. Ozai, even when their energies are unseen. I'm saying Raava's energy still comes out through Aang to support his energybending, not just to counter bloodbending. I assume that energybending in the Avatar State would have the same effect for other bending: its power would increase greatly. </p><p>Korra gets her bending restored by Aang as a past life/spirit. It seems equivalent to the past lives using the Avatar State while Aang isn't fully in control of it, yet. Aang's spirit goes into the Avatar State to bend Korra's energy. Korra doesn't need to at that moment. </p>

Aang's tattoos glowed because his energy was more concentrated in those areas since airbender tattoos happen to run along chi paths not because that's raava's energy. It's just like how ozai's eyes are much brighter than the rest of his body even though it's the same energy.

<p>When Aang bends Yakone's energy, we see only the white glow of the Avatar State, Since we know how the energy battle between Aang and Ozai plays out, we can imagine Aang's energy overpowering Yakone's. This shows Aang's spirit and the Avatar State are used in energybending. </p><p>It's possible that Aang used the same technique from his experience with Ozai. If Raava's energy does play a role in Aang's energybending, the only way it could come out is the white glow. How can you really be sure that the white parts of the energy doesn't contain a part of Raava along with Aang's spirit, when the Avatar State has been visualized the same way in the past?  </p><p>The controlled Avatar State is a complete sync between Aang and Raava. When only the white glow of Raava comes out of Aang's tattoos in the Avatar State, we know that Aang's will is there, too. When Aang's energy comes out, Raava could be there supporting him. </p>

Well I can't prove that Aang wasn't in the avatar state when he took ozai's bending but I don't think you should assume that he was in the avatar state just because we don't know for sure.

<p>Aang uses the same technique (hands on forehead and chest) both times on Ozai and Yakone. One time where Aang's energy is prominent. The another where only the Avatar State is showing. If it is only Aang's energy showing in his fight with Ozai, the Avatar State wouldn't need to appear in his fight with Yakone. I don't think it's wrong to assume that Raava could be supporting him both times. </p><p>However, we know energybending depends on Aang's spirit's unbendability. So, it's not just the Avatar State, and Raava is not energybending's most central part for Aang and Korra. </p>
