<p>So I was going through some old threads and for lavabending, many people said it required a more fluid style to be able to control and that only an earthbender with a waterbending mentality can do it, so why doesn't icebending require an earthbending mentality or require more rigid moves like an earthbender?

<p>Waterbenders actually do tend to be more rigid when controlling ice. A great example is Tonraq, who uses ice as a weapon a <i>lot</i> & fights much more like an earthbender than a waterbender. It's also seen on display [here], where Desna & Eska use a lot of powerful stomping maneuvers, usually typical of earthbending, in their fight with Ming-Hua.
