Bending wouldn't be more effective than guns if anything firearms if introduced would be used by benders and non benders alike.

Depending on what type of firearms are being introduced this would have a drastic effect on range and precision, muzzle/breech loading muskets/rifles wouldn't do well in the Avatar universe, but repeating firearms would fare far better. firearms ranging from late 1700s to early 1900's (Napoleonic Wars to WW1) would be able to compete against benders quite well.

(Yes there were repeating rifles in military use during the Napoleonic wars, by the Austrians.

Due to the Technological advancement of the Avatar world by the end of LoK its feasible for WW1 bolt action or perhaps machine guns to be invented. Most of this is due to the sophistication of the spirit energy cannon which has rifling (for some reason), and features a belt feed auto loading system or chain gun like system (uses a motor rather than gas pressure for reloading)
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6sk4db (skip to the 1:35 mark), the ammunition for the cannon pretty much introduces the concept of a cartridge. Technically you could have this in the Avatar world a few years after Legend of Korra:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yf8RExzMdfg Gas operated automatic weaponry is also possible given the invention and mass production of the combustion engine in vehicles and explosive projectile weapons used in warfare by the fire nation during the Day of Black Sun invasion. Remember those battlements Sokka, Katara, and their dad took out yeah they featured explosive tipped warheads which seemed to be triggered by an impact fuse on the tip.

The level and speed of technological advancement in Avatar is insane when you think about it.

There is also the fact that human reaction times can not compare to the speed of a fired bullet, however benders could "dodge bullets" by simply throwing off the shooter's aim with quick or erratic movements or using some sort of cover like rock walls, dust/fog clouds, or my favorite suppressive FIRE.

Ease of training and use is also a key factor, its takes months to years of intensive training to become a Bending Master who is able to take on several to 1-2 dozen opponents simultaneously and expect to win. (see siege of Ba Sing Se by the White Lotus).

Compare this to taking some random farm/city boy whether they are a bender or not, give them a few weeks worth of training with a gun and now you have a man that could very easily nuetralize a Bending Master with a few shots. Basically becoming a capable rifleman is much easier and faster than becoming a capable bender. Which means any military that adopted firearms alongside benders could effectively double the size of their military by including non benders in front line roles, but also increase the combat effectiveness of lesser trained troops both bender and nonbender alike.

this is not to say bending would be completely phased out, as the tactical capabilities and advantages offered by bending would be far to great to ignore even with the advent of firearms. From the ability to change the layout of the battlefield through manipulation of terrain using water and earth bending, the ability to reach around cover or deny areas using fire bending, to the speed, manuverability, and flight capabilties offered by air bending.

there is another thing that i was thinking: what about had guns propelled or used to expand bending abilities? rememebr the fire cannons of the fire nation navy during the battle againts the equalist, how possible could be to create a hand gun version of those cannons that intensifies the range of fire bending for example?
