ALL POSTSDo Avatars have individual souls?
<p>I keep hearing incarnated this or incarnated that. just tell me!
</p><p>All i know is that the avatar spirit is the one that reincarnates which is raava. but what of the host?
</p><p>Cause there's a differences between a soul and a spirit. can sombody help me!

<p>I would argue it was retconned to be more like straightforward reincarnation. Much of the original series implies the past lives do other things when Aang isn't around, while most of the <i>Legend of Korra</i> flashbacks are more off, almost like they're pre-recorded messages.

<p>Really? Korra still conversed with her past lives (in what little interaction she had with them) like her past lives still had general individual sentience. Unless you mean the whole Wan bits, which I thought was because her brain was broken so she was reliving the origin story (also convenient plot device). As far as I know, the Dalai lama doesn't sit around talking to his past incarnations but I could be wrong since I've never asked him that...

<p>The only times Korra talks with her past lives are Aang at the end of Book 1, which is relatively normal, & the whole thing with Wan.

</p><p>It actually seems to me that an Avatar's raw power comes only from Raava herself. Remember that Korra had many of her strongest feats (and some of the strongest feats in Avatar canon overall) <i>after</i> she lost her connection to her past lives. </p>

<p>I was under the impression that each Avatar had their own spirit and Raava was the connection between them who reincarnates into each new body, but if that's wrong as some people here has said, i assume it's an impression thing; each Avatar leaves an impression of sorts in Raava that carries their knowledge, feelings and memories of that life and that is what a new Avatar is communicating with when it comes to their past lives.
