<p>So I was thinking that, since we see that in the Avatar world science and technology always seem to advance quickly, where does that leave bending and bending traditions? Could scientists find a way to <span style="font-weight:normal;">artificially</span> reproduce bending and leave aside the genetic/spiritual connection, people quickly seem appealed to this and just jump on the project, soon thousand of years of tradition is lost because people can now bend wihout being born with this ability, without having a spiritual connection and instead replace this with induced chemicals, etc.
</p><p>This leaves the Avatar to fight the artifical bending project and to try to make the world embrace spirituality again
</p><p>What are your thoughts on this, can it happen? Any opinion is valid

<p>Well, it should be hypothetically possible. Wan shows us that you don't need to have any particular organs or anything to be given the power to bend via energybending. Since spirit energy can be manipulated scientifically, there shouldn't be anything stopping it.
</p><p>I do not think it is the Avatar's job to stop this or to enforce some arbitrary tradition, but rather to see that it is not abused.

<p>Well during the thinking process of this, I came to the conclusion that, if possible, artifical bending in itself is a big problem that the Avatar should take into account, just imagine the amount of problems and potential deaths that could occur due to somebody abusing science to become the next avatar through <i>drugs</i> that give you bending, I put tradition because I see that its a big part of the Avatar world and it must be conserved, but in this case that is the least of the problems </p>

<p>I could definitely see it happening, but I think it would come with some nasty side effects. Humans gaining the ability to bend when they were not originally born that way could result in strange mutations, irrational behavior, increased aging effects, possibly some types of illnesses. So I think it goes beyong the Avatar and turns into a "We can do it, But SHOULD we do it?" type fo debate.

<p>Something rather similar was done in Batman Beyond. Splicers, if you haven't watched that series, are people who splice their DNA with animals for cosmetic &/or pragmatic purposes. IE you could gain the sense of smell of a dog, the eyes of a cat, the claws of a bear, etc.
</p><p>What always irked me about that episode is it was like it couldn't handle the topic itself, so it arbitrarily made the researcher responsible for it this cultist/terrorist figure & gave it the side-effect of "increasing aggression," even though there's no reason it should do that.
</p><p>Which leads back to the whole "but it could end up in the wrong hands" thing, which is already true of normal bending.

<p>Never saw the episode, but I get what you mean. Korra was even a little guilty of that in Season 1 in that they never again addressed the issue of inequality between benders and nonbenders after it was revealed that Amon was lying.
</p><p>I could see someone who basically wanted to do the reverse of Amon (put everyone on equal footing by making everyone a bender) becoming successful eventually. I think it has a lot of interesting possibilities. (Maybe this is something our hypothetical new Avatar from the other thread has to deal with?)
