If this were, what would a character that functions as a self insert be like, I'd might actually saying Wan. Wan kinda looks like a scrawnier version of me. Come to think on it, he's quite a bit like me in personality in some respects.

If this were make a character you'd think was cool in the universe, I'd probably make an Avatar that rejected the Avatar and broke the cycle or found a way to seal themself away to remove the Avatar from the equation, like hop in the Tree of Time or something. I'd like a story about how they got to that viewpoint, the conflicts and their journey to be the last. This would probably include Vaatu's growing presence and this Avatar would be utilizing some newer powers incorporating Vaatu's contribution. This would probably be set in a futuristic setting, some thousand(s) years after Korra. I might be interested in a dystopian society with great technology. Perhaps flying cities in the clouds, underground complexes harvesting minerals and geothermal power, floating cities in the sea or along the sea floor. Exploring some new places.

Another possibility could be taking place during an expansion to space like a space colonization project going on, perhaps with a space elevator, and some factions crop up vying for power or even resenting then whole project itself, with the Avatar falling further and further into turmoil and corruption as Vaatu's influence grows over the generations, compounding the international problems.

Or we could have the spirits and the Spirit World merging further with the Physical World and we see a reintegration of them like we saw in Beginnings. We could have more conflict between the two sides, perhaps this time with the humans edging out the spirits and using them as resources. Or, we could have sides with mixes of humans and spirits fighting against other factions with possible mixes. Maybe we could even have hybrid human/spirits, some possible protagonists, some antagonists. We could even have new Avatar like beings now contesting the Avatar.

Or, if this were what kind of character do you think would be good for a story arc to follow and would be well received, I think they could go back in time, and follow an Avatar before Aang, somewhere in the middle of the Avatar history. Probably a female, likey an Earth or Fire Nation Avatar since that hasn't been done yet as a lead. I could see it as a less outgoing one that is kind of shy and comes out of that over the course of the show. They'd probably have very energetic and outspoken friends to contrast. This seems like a safe way to go which would still draw a crowd and make money.
