It's corroborated.  So if we're going to claim it's canon that Iroh the Younger is 40 (despite the fact that he doesn't look a day over 30 and that was a joke) or that Korra is 5'7" (despite that not making sense in relation to Mako supposedly being 6'2"), I'd say the same applies to this.

I'm a Kyalin shipper but admit that it's a crack pairing even though I'd say the chances of them having spent at least some time together are extremely high. I don't consider Lin to be desperate either. In fact I feel like she probably didn't show any interest in romance for a long time after Tenzin broke up with her. That's just how I feel. If Lin wasn't even willing to bond with her niece at first then she was probably closed to allowing a new romantic partnet to enter her life.
