Why wouldn't he be surprised? I haven't seen him show the slightest hint of knowing.

<p>He spent much of the downtime with Korra and Asami in book four. It's pretty easy to see when two people dig each other when you're around them. Really, most of the immediate cast probably knew, just some viewers didn't because they didn't get to see all of the little interactions. </p>

<p>Still not sure, he appeared to view no difference in their relationship. Of course, this is all just my point of view. We'll have to wait and see - it will be very interesting though. </p>

<p>But he did view a difference, he knew that "something" was "going on between" them. Whether he ever figured out anything more than that or simply chalked it all up to the secret letters is unclear, but the fact remains, he sensed some change in the relationship. </p><p>I don't mean to be pedantic, but this supports Weltall's point: Mako realized that "something" was going on because he was in close proximity to them. </p>

<p>As for Mako, I'm with Neo Bahamut in that he seemed to realize as of early-Book 4 that there was <i>something </i>going on between Asami and Korra. Though at that precise point he didn't quite realize exactly what that something was. He might eventually figure it out, but when he does his reaction could be quite entertaining. </p>

<p>He realized as early as Book 3. When he saw them together and saluted before the Earth Kingdom trip, he was more than uneasy, eyes shifting back and forth between them. He may not have know about what, but he felt it. Maybe he only had the typical fear of being talked about when ex's get together, but he knew *something* was there. </p><p>Partially explains why he did not want to go with them at first. </p>

<p>That's actually kind of an interesting thought. I always attributed the awkwardness of his dialog more to the fact that he was talking to both his ex-girlfriends (at least one of whom dumped him because of how he felt about the other) than to any realization of anything between the two of them. I dunno about you, but in that situation I'd be pretty awkward too :P </p><p>But you might be right, and it could also be due to more than that. </p>

<p>That's what I thought too, but then somebody labeled it as confirmation bias.
