When I saw the trailer I had really high hopes for Book 4. With episode 1, it got off to a good start. However after a while the intensity and quality started declining after the Battle of Zaofu (albeit because of the budget cut...can't blame that). Then Beyond the Wilds picked up the momentum again. After that was Operation Beifong, a really awesome escape sequence with the complete Beifong family as well. Kuvira's Gambit is probably my favorite episode this book, especially with the reveal of the Colossus and Kuvira's desperate decision.Â

However after watching the finale and looking back at the entire book, I thought it was slightly underwhelming.Â

- I love Kuvira as a character. However as a villain she is definitely underwhelming in terms of the threat she posed and her strength. When the show began I told myself not to judge her until she reveals every power she has. But in the end she was merely a skilled metalbender. Granted, the Colossus gave her increased strength, but do you think she can compare to the likes of UnaVaatu, the literal embodiment of evil in the Avatarverse, or the Red Lotus, the counterpart to the White Lotus and who also have way more attractive bending styles than Kuvira? And Kuvira was nothing more than a military conqueror--nothing new that we've seen right? To me her intent sounded flat and cliché. Amon and the Red Lotus had more interesting and deadlier purposes.

- No Fire Nation. Just why...?

- The plot was not as tight as Book 3, which is possibly the best book in LOK. Too many episodes where the overall arc of Kuvira did not progress at all (for example, the Calling and Reunion). We have had little to none character development of Kuvira as well. How did she go literally from a dancer to a military conqueror? She started out sinister from the beginning--a 180 degree turn from her personality in Book 3. You could say that she was overwhelmed by lust for power over the three years, but why didn't we get any small bits--for example, her destroying a town of innocent civilians to rid the rebels, and that's how she realized to make tough decisions for the greater good--of her three-year conquest of the Earth Kingdom, to at least portray her change (for example, just a dark face change).

Don't get me wrong, Book 4 was an awesome book, but I don't think it lived up to the season finale billing. A perfect scenario would have been that Book 4 was moved up the timeline to say, book 2, and had the plot of the Red Lotus as the finale, then that would have been awesome. Book 4 would be a good buildup season but NOT a final one.

Anyways, if anybody has opinions about book 4 on how it could have been better, this is the place to spout it out and argue. :)
