<p>I watched the episode again and again and the way conversation went it made me think that it really isn't right to say that "Toph didn't care" or "Toph didn't suspect because katara <i>thought</i> so". </p><p>I think Katara was good at lying in this episode.  Hadn't Azula lied to Toph during "The day of black sun" episode by saying "<i>I am a 600ft platypus bear with.....</i>blah blah". And Toph said, "Alright, I admit it you are good at it."? </p><p>Maybe, Katara was so moved to help the poor people that she lied and thought that she lied for purpose of good and thus there wasn't any <i>nervous physical reaction body </i>or <i>trigger of a chemical reaction in the brain</i>. </p>

It seems simpler to me to just suggest that Toph didn't bother to check.

<p>I wonder how often Toph just plays along when she clearly knows a lie from the truth, especially when she gets to watch someone shoot theirself in the foot. </p>

<p>She just woke up, she might've sensed it but was too groggy to think much of it. </p>

<p>So all of you guys think that Katara cannot be a good liar? She has shown inevitable talent in every aspect. Her waterbending breaks the limit when she is preoccupied with anger or saving someone so dear to her. I feel Katara lied without revealing she was lying. </p>

<p>Possibly. But I doubt it. She might be slightly better above average of lying, but I think it was mostly my aforementioned theory of her grogginess interfering with her perceptions. </p>

<p>Katara has tried lying at other times & wasn't very good at it. She's not really that great with controlling her emotional expression in general. Also, fooling Toph's ability goes beyond simply having a good poker face. It's not something I'd assume when there are other options that are less of a stretch. </p>

hey wait. Say Katara wore some special shoes that insulate her heart beats to seismic sense? Just saying.
