Kuvira was the metalbending officer that saved Tonraq. Fun fact: She is voiced by Zelda Williams, daugher of the late Robin Williams.

And there's plenty of proof its mercury, from the fact that it is a metallic liquid (there is only one metal that is liquid at room temperature), its significance in ancient East Asian medicine and culture, and the fact Korra suffers from its symptoms.

Actually there are three metallic elements that are liquid at room temperature, but only Mercury is common enough. (Gallium and Francium are the other two, but the latter is radioactive and the former is difficult to amass.) Two other metallic elements become liquids at close to room temperature: Rubidium and Cesium; Bromine is also a liquid at STP but isn't metallic.
