<p>I think it was his family, with the exception of his uncle, that gave him a horrible impression on ruling citizens. He observed, saw how horrible it is, and saw what not to do. He saw the effect that his family had on the world, and not only saw it, he lived it. I think that had a lot to do with the humility aspect.
</p><p>But mostly, I think it was the guidance of Iroh that made him the good leader that he turned out to be. Had he gone through that journey alone, without Iroh, not much would have changed. He would have still been that banished brat.
