Since the beginning of avatar, many new fantasy abilities have been added then the original 4 shown.

Some of them I like, some I do not. While it is far to late, this is how they should've decided whether to add an ability.

ask these questions
1)is it early in the story? (if yes, then its ok. if no, move to next question)
2) Does it make sense? (Is it an extension of an established one?) if yes, next question. if no, don't add it unless early enough.
3) Is it OP, does it unbalanced the other abilities or make others pointless? if yes, don't add it. if no, go ahead and add it.

so lets look at all the bendings added throughout both stories.

lightning (ATLA)]
early? yes redirected in episode 13, generated in 20.
make sense? honestly, not really. it isn't fire BUT it was early enough.
OP? replace fire? nope, it takes long to generate so only sometimes used. also only a few firebenders can do it.
PASS

healing]
early? yeah kinda. episode 16.
make sense? eeeeh, not sure. I mean the body IS made of water. BUT its early.
OP? a little bit BUT not if only some waterbenders can do it. and it DOES take longer the worse the injury
PASS

seismic sense]
early? eeeeh getting later, season 2 episode 6.
make sense? yeah, if you can manipulate earth why not feel the vibrations like echo location.
OP? I do think they made it a little OP toph. she was too good, especially for a 12 year old. still, it had it's weaknesses.
PASS (but, it'd be better if a user didn't know absolutely everything on the ground around them).

plantbending]
early? doesn't matter cuz....
make sense? yeah, its just water bending.
OP? nope not at all. plants aren't any super material. also, have different properties than straight water, making them have different uses in combat.
PASS

metalbending (ATLA)]
early? nope.
make sense? it does, it IS earth.
OP? ok, sort of. not really at first, for the user has to be touching it. it becomes OP at the end when toph bends it like normal earth. that was stupid. also, metal isn't everywhere to make earth redundant.
PASS (except at the end)

combustion]
early? nope.
make sense? sort of, it IS fire. just bent in a different way. also, as a rare freak thing its ok.
OP? somewhat, but remember, he was defeated by a nonbender. it has a good enough weakness to make it not OP.
PASS

bloodbending (ATLA)]
early? nope.
make sense? yep, it IS bending water.
OP? NOT since it can only be done during the full moon.
PASS

energybending]
early? nope.
make sense? eeeeh, not really. it isn't even part of a previous element.
OP? a little bit. but you have to get to someone first. so no
FAIL but kind of acceptable. first one I don't like. would've liked it if it was shown or at least alluded to earlier. but I accept it due to the fact that the writers didn't have much choice

now getting into LOK, the first question doesn't even need to be asked anymore

lightning (LOK)]
make sense? was established previously.
OP? yeah, it kinda is now that any firebender can do it. and it requires little motion to do. effectively replacing fire in combat.
FAIL

metalbending (LOK)]
make sense? yeah.
OP? It is now that they can bend it like normal earth. metal is a hard substance to compete with. and its too easy to destroy machines now.
FAIL

bloodbending (LOK)]
make sense? yeah.
OP? heeeelllz yeah. makes it boring when you can do it all the time. makes someone practically unbeatable. and makes more uninteresting fights. replaces normal water completely.
FAIL
and it can take away bending! way OP!
EPIC FAIL

waterbending spirit calming stuff]
make sense? nope not at all. why does water turn yellow and calm spirits?
OP? yep, against spirits it is.
FAIL

wan making prison magic ball for vaatu]
uuuuh what?
FAIL

..uuuh spirit projection? or something? ]
make sense? ummmm I guess that's what aang did in book 1.
OP? not before but NOW that you can communicate with others it is. that's dumb. it is also done to easily. aang could only do it in very spiritual places .
FAIL

lavabending]
make sense? well, I guess so. It IS earth afterall.
OP? HEEELL YEAH! makes normal earth totally pointless. and lava is deadly is hell. water should be the only element that can change states of matter. lavabending should only be possible to the avatar AND only lava that is already there. even the avatar shouldn't be able to change normal earth to lava. that's too OP.
FAIL

I probably missed a ton in season 2 of LOK. so much stupid shit happened that season I cant even remember it. I don't really want to.

so what do you guys think? I think its much better writing to establish abilities early on and write with that. its too easy to just keeping adding new crap. that's one of the things I originally loved about avatar, it was the first fantasy story i'd seen that seemed to have fixed defined rules with it's powers. like a real universe.

many other stories (harry potter, lotr, even star wars a little bit) have always had much more ambiguously defined fantasy powers. giving the writer to much freedom. while those stories are great, that IS one aspect of them I don't like.

these reasons are a big chunk of why I don't like LOK. though there are other reasons.

if you've read this whole thing, or even a good portion of it, thank you.
feel free to voice your opinion whatever it may be. i'd love to discuss this subject.
