It would be dangerous for them to betray Azula that is for sure, but I still think the Dai Li would have the upper hand, because they are after all elite soldiers used as a secret police and they are quite many. A good example of their combat prowess would be when a few of them managed to easily defeat Zuko during episode 0220 "The Crossroads of Destiny", now I am not saying that Zuko was as powerful as Azula at that moment in the series and his battle strategy at that point was horrible, but he is still a very powerful firebender.
<p>So I would say that the Dai Li did it because they believed they would gain something from it, I mean without the help of the Dai Li, I think it would be quite hard for the Fire Nation to invade Ba Sing Se before Ozai's eventuall defeat at the hands of Aang.

</p><p>Well the episode shows us whats happening that is true, but it doesn't tell us anything definitive about the thoughts going through the minds of the Dai Li, that subject is up to interpretation and I suppose that is way this thread was created.

<p>That makes sense, however, in one of the episodes (I'm going to say Crossroads of Destiny, simply because I cannot quite recall), one of the Dai Li agents, while talking to Long Feng, says;
</p><p>"She's terrifying, yet inspiring"
</p><p>It's kind of in plain sight that all/some of the Dai Li agents are afraid of making a simple mistep with Azula.
</p><p>
</p><p>However, it does make a lot of sense to think they would get something out of it, Aula is one of the most powerful firebenders in the show, possessing her insanity, lightning, and exceedingly strong flame power.
