"Auntie" Ashuna was a resident of the Southern Water Tribe and an acquaintance of Katara and Sokka. She was known primarily for her blubbered seal jerky.[2]
History[]
Ashuna often made batches of blubbered seal jerky which she offered to members of her tribe, most of whom were not fond of the dish. In 92 AG, Ashuna offered Katara some jerky and the latter broke a tooth given how tough the meat was to chew.
In 102 AG, Nutha brought up the subject of Auntie Ashuna's cuisine while reminiscing about childhood stories with Niyok and Katara, prompting the latter to recall how she broke her tooth trying to eat her blubbered seal jerky.[2] While preparing to journey back to the South Pole region several months later, Sokka expressed his excitement about returning home so that he could eat Auntie Ashuna's blubbered seal jerky, much to his sister's surprise. After Katara claimed that he hated the dish, Sokka responded that "absence [made] the heart grow fonder."[3]
When Katara and Sokka arrived in Harbor City, Ashuna was spotted in the crowd by the siblings as she was selling her seal jerky from a cart. As they joyously reunited, she told them how her business had been steady and that she was now living with several other elderly people in a grand building after her hut had been torn down as part of the village's modernization process. She enthusiastically offered Sokka some of her seal jerky, noting that it had been ages since he had tasted her secret recipe, before shouting out to the rest of the tribe and announce the return of the siblings.[1]
